Things you did as a Kid,that you shouldna
replied on: 5/19/2008 11:41:04 PM

The scariest thing that I ever did was as a 7 year old for a dare I climbed on to the top of the water towers that were behind the Nottingham House Pub. I've been afraid of hights ever since.

This one was done as a dare for the sum of half a crown, 2s/6d real money (12.5p monkey money). The dare was to lie between the rails and be run over by a loco and wagons. The location was the line from Coppice Colliery, near the bridge over the road. The location was carefully selected, loco appeared and P K dashed in front of it. He got down into the lowest hollow between two sleepers. The loco and wagons screeeched to a halt. The driver got out and started running back to see what had happened. P K got up and ran away, the driver shouted at the group who had watched the event unfold. We took off like we had our ? on fire. I think that is the fastest I have run in my life. That took place in the late 50s.

We used to put copper coins and 6 inch nails on the track to be squashed. We did some stupid things then and now we shake our heads at the antics of todays youth.

nowt changes

These things that lads did were just so foolhardy. If our parents knew the half of it!

We also used to put pennies on the railway lines, which got squashed flat into a copper disc with all the writing obscured.

And now the ironic bit. What job do I do now? Safety Manager in Construction - trying to get young lads to behave themselves on site!!!

better to be a sissy and still be here, Robert.

I remember 2 children (separate cases) falling off there onto the railway track -one (if I remember correctly) resulted in the death of a young boy

so that is probably why it is a thing "you did as a kid. but shouldna"

If you remember the footbridge over the railway line in Langley Mill from North Street to Bridge Street, the top flange of the parapet was about 8 inches (20cm) wide. Only a cissy wouldn't be able to walk the full length of the bridge on the parapet.

My friend and I did this too but we got caught out by the cashier who remembered us from the childrens Saturday matinees. It was especailly embarrassing as we were on first dates (and last) with two boys who were old enough to get in. However she did allow us in but we never got to pay cheap rate again.

As a 12-13 year old, putting loads of make-up on, stilletos, and generally dressing up to look older, and then conning our way into the Empire to see an "A" film. What was even better was if we managed to get in to see an "X" film without being turned away as being too young. We weren't particularly bothered about the films, it was the fact of trying to fool the staff that was the thrilling part.

Well for me, with the Ebenezer Street gang, we played down at the "cut" (canal), which was generally forbidden , and used to play on the loading conveyors at the Aristoc Factory during the lunch break.
