Hi
there was no garden party at Elmsfield House in 1908 or 1909, Mr John Holbrook was buying a house in 1909
August 20th 1909
Ripley & Heanor News
Heanor
Property market Mr Sydney Watson, Heanor, offered for sale by public auction, at the Nags Head Hotel Heanor, on Monday evening, several properties. A freehold dwelling-house known as "The Delves" with garden, outbuildings etc, 60, Thorpes Road Heanor (gross annual retal £7.16s), and comprising an area of 300 square yards, was knocked down to Mr John Holbrook for £94. Paul / Ice,
Elmsfield House is on the corner of Grace Crescent and Mansfield Rd its facing Mansfield Rd, the road was widened and maybe Grace Crescent was built after the house? We have garden parties for 1910, 1923 and 1924 so maybe if I look at 1909 for land sales or planning permission? What do you think?

Ice
Sorry I got my Crescent and Avenue mixed up
From the same publication a further Garden Party is advertised and reads:
Garden Party, Wednesday, June 25th, 1924.
In the grounds adjoining Elmsfield House, Heanor (by kind permission of John Holbrook.,Esq) I think the house in question was definitely on the corner of Grace Crescent fronting Mansfield Road Heanor and was once owned by Ernie Slater (Slaters Glass)

Extract taken from the Langley Mill Primitive Methodist Church record of progress regarding fund raising for payment of the chapel debt:
John Holbrook, Esq., Elmsfield House, kindly placed his grounds at our disposal for a garden party, "only on the condition that we ourselves work with the idea of making it a success by our own efforts," and the results of the garden party held on Wednesday, June 20th,1923,quite delighted our host.
We were always led to believe that Elmsfield House was on the corner of Grace Crescent.

10th April 1913
Heanor Observer
Street widening
This was a large report and I only copied this part:
“The first dangerous position occurs at “The Dene” it is proposed here to set back the wall and palisades in front of Mr Fletchers house, and also to put Mr Holbrook’s new wall at “Elmsfield House” further back, also to take down the stables opposite.”

The beautiful grounds of “Elmsfield House”, lent by Mr and Mrs J. Holbrook will,

it is Mr J Holbrooks garden and house, but I also read a article about the open day (not enough time to copy it)but it said that being a new garden and open for the first time so maybe the house was new too?

Ice

No, I've not had chance yet - what with my shifts and rushing round printers with the new book - but I hope to get there over the next couple of days.
