Strong's Shoe Shop
replied on: 4/9/2008 6:38:51 PM talltomuk I only knew him as Mr Strong so don't know what his first name was I'm afraid. I lived next door to his shop between 1977 and 1983. I have always known of Roger and Marie as we grew up in the same area and went to the same schools though I do not know them well. I am beginning to think that their dad was Mr Strongs younger brother because I vaguely remember the sign above the shop saying Strong Bros at one time. |

replied on: 4/7/2008 8:13:46 PM Hello Talltomuk I don't think I know of Diane and Linda. It's Marie and Roger who I knew. I can just remember their Dad who died quite young and I was never sure if he was Tom Strongs brother or son, so perhaps this may be where I could be mixed up. |

replied on: 4/4/2008 9:05:38 PM Mr. Strong was extremely short in stature, and could often be seen (or not seen as it happens) driving along in his car at around 10 miles per hour with just the top of his head visible above the steering wheel. It was always a source of amazement to me how he could see the road ahead. His right turn from High Street into Midland Road was a treat not to be missed! There was another man working in the shop in the 1960's named Peter, who I believe was a brother, but who died long before Tom. |

Strong's Shoe Shop
replied on: 4/4/2008 6:28:53 PM Hello Talltomuk Strongs shoe shop was on the opposite side of high st to Tesco but it was further down past the Derby Arms pub and straight across from what was a small hat shop and Richards Hairdressers, as far as I know 1960s through to about 1979. They are now flats. I don't know how old your great grandad would be, but the Mr Strong who I lived next door to between 1977 and 1983 had two grandchildren I knew who will be aged around 51 and 47. I knew them from school. This Mr Strong (who ran the shoe shop) lived on Hands road Heanor. I know he died several years ago but can't remember the year. He must have been well in his eighties. |

Strong's Shoe Shop
replied on: 4/2/2008 9:33:56 PM A friend remembers her grandmother taking her to Strongs to buy shoes in early 1950's. The shop was on High St - situated just around the corner from Midland Road -on the corner was Worleys butchers and a little further up was Strongs - address was 52 High St. At that time they also repaired shoes - it was considered to be a specialist shoe shop -specialising in every aspect of footwear. The son, as my friend remembers was John Strong and was a friend of her uncles. They also had a shop on Ray St - which is listed in 1941 Kellys Directory. |

Strong's Shoe Shop
replied on: 4/2/2008 9:03:09 PM The only Strongs shoe shop I knew of was on High st Heanor.I remember going there when I was small and Mr Strong, as we always called him, would say 'they'll fit better with wear' if you said the shoes were a bit tight. I can't recall seeing his wife. This would be in the early 1960s, but I remember some relations who had a sweet/confectioners shop on Midland road called Marions. They were a nice family. I actually lived next door to this shoe shop between 1977 and 1983. Mr Strong was still running his shoe shop then, but he seemed to be well past national retirement age. |

replied on: 4/2/2008 3:36:53 PM A query recieved by the Society: "I'm looking for the history or some information about an old shoe shop in Heanor, which used to owned by my Great Grandfather Thomas Strong on Market Street, I think. Have you got any information or anything on this? Many thanks." |
