Heanor Observer
1951
Passing of Marlpool Veterans
Having lost the heads of two of its most highly respected families during the week, Marlpool has been under a cloud of sorrow.
Saturday recorded the passing of Mr Charles Boxall of Hardy Barn, at the age of 73 years, and the following day Mr John Hobson died at the ripe old age of 89 years at his home in Ella Bank Rd. Life long residents their names are synonymous with the parish in the interest of which they gave years of both private and public service.
Both were founder members of the Shipley working men’s club and Institute, in connection with which they rendered yeoman service in many ways. Horticulture also claimed the attention of these two local stalwarts, and for over 32 years Mr Hobson did most useful work as a member of the Heanor Fire brigade.

HI Jenks, I've got a great photo of John Hobson here taken I think around the late 1930's, looking at his age, it couldn't be any earlier than that I guess!!!

Can't work out how to post photo's any help?

Also got one of my Grandfather as a young boy following the Victory band at Creswell in 1919, would like to share it as well...

I think that I've found Minnie living on Ray Street on 1891 census, parents John Hobson born 1862 Ilkeston & Mary (nee Brown)
c1864 Clay Cross, also a son Fred. Mary Brown found on 1871 census living on Loscoe Road just below Red Lion Square.
Can't find any of them on 1901 census.

I think that I have the same Hobson line as you Suz. Two of Joseph's children Elijah and Mary Ann Hobson born c1865 Mapperley married into the Boam family from Shipley. Elijah married Mary Ann Boam, and Mary Ann Hobson married John Boam.
Joseph Hobson c1838 Mapperley married Hannah Lees from West Hallam, can be found on at least two census records living on Chapel St Marlpool.
I haven't seen a Minnie Hobson as yet, I will take another look.

Hobson was a name associated with mapperley Village for many years - although the name has "died out" in more recent years, there are still a few Hobson descendants living in that area- in fact one cottage is still referred to by locals as "Mrs Hobsons" -although she passed away many years ago.
Then there was Joseph Hobson who had a son Joseph -and he had a son Joseph -who went by his middle name of Rex - he married my cousin (strangely she is in Australia at the moment for 6 weeks and I think Brisbane is where she will be for one week!)Joseph Rex Hobson sadly passed away suddenly 2 years ago. Some of the Hobsons originally lived in (known locally as) Moons Yard Mapperley.

if of interest I will try to remember more about the Mapperley Hobsons

Since I've found this site to be such a wealth of knowledge on the heanor area, I'll ask if anyone has tree links to the Hobson family, my Great Grandmother was Minnie Hobson b 19 Oct 1888 her parents were John Hobson and Mary Brown, Hobson I beleive were from West hallam, Mapperly, Shipley areas

I'm local here in Brisbane Australia...does anyone want any general assitance on Queensland, Brisbane or any other geographics in Australia. I may also be able to assit in other more specific family history needs for those members looking for stuff on Australia!
