The Purpose of the Gudgeon Hole was to remove the water from the higher level and with the use of Sluice Gates fill the lower level to lift the Barge I recall the one at New Eastwood you could walk over the Co-op fields to it from Milnhay Road.Think Gudgeon was a local name for it.
