Sorry if I'm going off the main subject but would this be the same John Holmes who was father in law to Edward Bonner?(pictured together in your publication "Around Old Heanor" It mentions beneath the photo that Edward Bonner lived at Highfields House, Marlpool at one time.) I'm interested because my grandmother Eliza Smith came from Bakewell to work in service there, I believe around 1907, and I've been unable to discover anything at all about her time there, her employer etc. I only know that Highfields stands at the end of Mill Road at the top of 'the commons' (the footpath leading to Lower Claramount Road) I just wondered if anyone has any knowledge to share please.

It very much looks like the hannah you have in 1841 is "yours" -
1851
Underwood
James Holmes Widow 52 FWK cotton
Simeon 17
benjamin 15
Ann 22
Hannah 11
all b bagthorpe Notts
Bagthorpe, underwood, Selston all are very close together

Possibly her age was a year out on death cert? and she was b 1839 -there is a registration to ft that. Why not purchase Hannah's marriage cert -that would confirm father's name and occupation.

Hi Suz,

In my quest for Hannah Holmes birth registration, I've collected the following information over the years.

Here's their marriage registration:
NFHS marriage transcript
DATE MSURNAME MFIRSTNAME FSURNAME FFIRSTNAME PLACE Record
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
15/04/1858 GREEN Thomas HOLMES Hannah SELSTON 236739
--------------------------

Not sure whether or not the following birth registrations have possibilities. Hannah's birthdate on her death certificate was given as Jun 8, 1838, however the birthplace, other than England, was illegible:

Hannah Holmes birth registrations:
Matlock District June quarter 19 514 1838
Chesterfield District December quarter 19 357 1838
--------------------------

CENSUS: Underwood is within walking distance of Selston, less than .5 mi--Is this Hannah HOLMES & family in the 1841C at Underwood, Notts? The only male names that match her childrens' are Thomas & Benjamin while her sole daughter was Laura Ann:

8 861 HOLMES James 50 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD FWK UND Y 1 174416
8 861 HOLMES Mary 45 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174417
8 861 HOLMES Samuel 20 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD L UND Y 174418
8 861 HOLMES Thomas 15 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174419
8 861 HOLMES Ann 13 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174420
8 861 HOLMES Joseph 10 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174421
8 861 HOLMES Simeon 8 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174422
8 861 HOLMES Benjamin 6 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174423
8 861 HOLMES Hannah 2 Middle Brook UNDERWOOD UND Y 174424
---------------------------

Upon reviewing my information, the following is Thomas Green's birth registration, father was George Green and his mother Lydia's maiden name was Wharmby:

International Genealogical Index - British Isles 1.THOMAS GREEN - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Christening: 17 SEP 1837 Kirkby In Ashfield, Nottingham, England

Thomas was a coal miner. Their children in birth order: Benjamin & George were born in England, while the following were born in Pennsylvania: Laura Ann, Aaron, Thomas, Reuben, Walter. The family were Primitive Methodist church members.

John Holmes, Heanor profile stated he was once a constable. Coincidentally, Thomas Green's brother, John, was also a constable working for the local Coal and Iron Police force.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Ann

Reuben and Aaron are not unusual names
Do you have the marriage cert of your greatgrandparents?
That would give father's names and occupations -and sometimes relatives are witnesses.

Have you found Thomas and hannah on any census ?

Hi, I'm very late to this discussion. My ggm was Hannah Holmes & ggf Thomas Green. They were married in Selston, Notts 1858. Thos was born in Bolsover in 1837, but I've been unable to locate Hannah's baptism record. Upon reading the biography of John Holmes of Heanor, it occurred to me ggm Hannah might have been born there; however, the record remains elusive. Can anyone tell me if the christian names Aaron & Reuben are or were common in the Heanor area? Those were the names of two of Hannah's sons--remaining sons were John, Benjamin, George & Walter while her only daughter was Laura. If any of this rings a bell or if anyone can offer some advice with my quest, I'd be forever grateful. By the way, Hannah Holmes gave her birthdate as June 8, 1838. Thanks in advance. Ann

I have joined the Clara Holbrook autograph topic rather late. She was the daughter of my grandmother's sister, Harriet. the John Holmes in the book would have been her maternal grandfather, and the Mary Holmes his second wife.
I remember meeting Ella Holbrook (later Lovat) some time in the 50s - a rather grande dame,if I recall.

bailey is not an uncommn name . I have Baileys in my tree who originated from Staffordshire and settled in Denby/Heanor/Langley Mill area in latter half of the 1800's -they were potters and came to work at the Pottery in Denby and then Langley Mill.
Bailey is a fairly nationwide name -and of course in the 1800s people moved a lot more than we give them credit for

Hullo, I'm a late entrant to the discussion about Clara Holbrook's autograph book. She was the daughter of Harriet Holmes and John Holbrook and her younger sister was Ella, later Lovatt. The signature of John Holmes in the book was probably that of her grandfather and my great grandfather; Mary Holmes was probably his second wife whom he married in 1886. I remember in the fifties being taken to visit Ella Lovatt - an imposing old lady.

Hullo
I'm a late arriver at the Clara Holbrook autograph book discussion. She was the daughter of Harriet Holmes and John Holbrook. The John Holmes in the autograph book was probably her grandfather and my great grandfather; Mary Holmes would have been his second wife, widow of Joseph Pollard, whom he married in 1886. I remember being taken to meet Ella Lovatt, Clara's younger sister, in the fifties: she was elderly, of course, but very imposing.

Hi Robert,I'm a bit late on the scene and have left a message for Luce but have no reply,if you received a copy of the autograph book is it possible to get a copy of it as the Robinson's mentioned are undoubtably Robert Henry Robinson's children. Regards Ian

Hi Lucinda,I replied to your message stating i knew of all the Robinson's in your autograph book except Geo,however ive now found that (Robert George Fox Robinson) brother of Winnifred & Lillian dropped his first name & went by G.F Robinson as seen in his attendance to his father's memorial at St Lawrence church 1914,so i feel confident he is the Geo Robinson referred to.Ian
