John Holmes, of Allandale House, is known as "Heanor's Grand Old Man." He lived from 1820 to 1919, and was something of a town celebrity - on the Royal Visit of King George V in 1914, he was presented to the King. There have been quite a few articles in the Heanor and District Local History Society about Mr Holmes - I could get you copies of the main articles if you wanted (Please contact me by e-mail) In relation to Kate Linsey and Ursina Fopp, they ran a private school at Heanor Hall, which probably explains why there are so many other entries with that address - no doubt the pupils all getting in on the act! The first mention of the school that I am aware of was in 1890. By 1893, the Board of Health leased Heanor Hall from Edward Miller Mundy for the purpose of "a school of Higher Education in Heanor and District." I do not know whether this means that Misses Linsey and Fopp had left by that time. This certainly fits in with your dating of the book. Again, there are quite a few articles about Heanor Hall in our newsletters. Although not directly related to this, I know that at Aldercar Hall, a few miles away, they had a Swiss Teacher - perhaps a common thing in those days. I am sure that the Society would be grateful for a copy of the autograph book, and may well be able to assist further. We don't have another Committee meeting until July, but I shall mention it then. Please get in touch if there is anything more I can help with, or if you think it would be possible for us to obtain a copy. Thanks Robert |
