L'Hopital's Rule
posted on: 6/14/2006 10:25:21 PM

Did you know that L'Hopital's rule was discovered by Johann Bernoulli, but through one of the strangest business deals I have ever heard of, he sold the writes of this result to L'Hopital?

sorry, I meant rights, not writes. But anyways, another example of misnaming is with both the Taylor and Maclaurin expansions- neither of which came from Taylor or Maclaurin, but rather independently from both, a scottish mathematician named James Gregory in 1668, and John Bernoulli in 1690. Taylor and Maclaurin simply popularized the ideas associated with their names, hence them being crowned discoverers.
