She always walks 2km/h when going uphill, 6km/h when going downhill and 3km/h when on level ground. If her total walking time is 6 hours, then what is the total distance she walks in km? |

replied on: 10/25/2006 3:31:40 PM the basic equation is u/2 + d/6 + h/3 = 6 u...uphill kilometers d...downhill k... h...horizontal... there is a condition that has to be fulfilled namely u=d as it is tacitly assumed that the length of any walk is equal in length to the length of the return path both equations combined give the following : 4*u + 2*h = 36 the result is : whatever number you choose for u = d, the sum of u + d + h = 18 for example : u d h sum 1+1+16 = 18 2+2+14 = 18 3+3 + 12 = 18 5+5+ 8 = 18 7+7+4 = 18 ... 9+9 = 18 the system works with any number for u,d =>(0,9) and the numbers need not to be integers as which were used in the examples above. |
