I suggest that you use LAPLACE´s rule.

It can be found in any good textbook on linear algebra of which there are plenty or
by searching in the internet for it

In German it is known under "Laplacescher Entwicklungssatz" the english version of it should bear similar name...

As long as you need not to proof Laplace´s rule the application of it is not especially
difficult.

Dear Mr. Rogler,

use GOOGLE typing

´rank of a matrix´

take the first answer namely the hint from

WIKIPEDIA ( english version !!! )

There the proper explanations are given in a very good fashion.

I recommend that you use the GAUSS method mentioned there.

If you come across the book THE LINEAR ALGEBRA PROBLEM SOLVER from REA you might consult it with profit as the proofs given there are suited to facilitate understanding.

with kind regards
