Bernard Cornwell

That's my all-time favourite list. Short on quantity, long on quality, I like to think.

Not heard of Bernard Cornwell before? What kind of books does he writer?

Cornwell writes historicals. Very gritty, detailed historicals. Even his King Arthur books leave off the mythic/fantasy trappings.

Not to my taste, being too bloody and violent for me, but he does what he does very well. He's got a lot of fans over on Chronicles, Rune.

And he wrote the Sharpe books on which the TV mini-series starring Sean Bean is based.

(I did like the episodes I've seen of that. Sad to say, violence goes down easier when the lead character has so much roguish charm.)

Eric Flint for the shards and Belesarius series
L.E. Modsett
Steven Erikson
Glen Cook
Karl Wagner
Mersedes Lackry

as you can see mostly dark authors.....at 62 one has read much and learned to discriminate
You may like to add Paul Kearney's latest book Mark Of Ran and previous 5 book Ship series to that list along with R Scott Bakker's Prince Of Nothing Trilogy, JV Jones current Sword Of Shadows trilogy, Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast classic and George RR Martin's current Song Of Ice and Fire series, to name just a few if you like the darker and more gritty read.
