replied on: 7/22/2005 3:11:09 AM As far as recent discoveries go, I was impressed by Kate Constable, "The Singer of All Songs." Also Dahlov Ipcar's "A Dark Horn Blowing." (Not a new book, but new to me.) Several of the authors on my list over on the favorites thread are YA authors. Will spare you all the repetition so that I don't sound like a broken record, and just mention that I also like Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci books ("Charmed Life," "Magicians of Caprona," etc.) and her Dalemark books ("Cart and Cwdder," "Drowned Ammet," etc.). |

replied on: 7/22/2005 8:01:12 AM I know there is a lot of fuss about eragon, however, for me i found it very imature in places. I really did feel that it was written by a teenager. Parts of it were brilliant and insightful, but on the whole it suffered for his immaturity. I felt, that if it had been left for a few years, then revisited by the author, it would have been one of the greats of our time, but as it stands i won't give it shelf space. Although Kudos to Chris Pallini for finishing a book so young. I'm nearly double his age when he wrote it and still struggling with my first. |

replied on: 7/22/2005 8:02:53 AM for me the question of YA writers is tricky. I tend to pick up a book and read it, only to discover, ages later that it's young adult. point of interest, when i went to pick up a copy of LOTR, i found it in the ya section of my library, same with many pratchett books, from the night watch series. |

replied on: 8/2/2005 9:21:07 AM One of the best series of fantasy books has to be Stravaganza by Mary Hoffman. It's a trilogy, and the books are: Stravaganza: City of Masks Stravaganza: City of Stars Stravaganza: City of Flowers The first book is about a boy called Lucien who's got cancer, being given a notebook. Falling asleep with the notebook in his hand, he wakes up in a world called Bellazza. In Bellazza, he meets a girl called Arianne who has an unknown secret. He also meets Rodolfo, who works closely with the Duchessa of Bellazza. Rodolfo is Lucien's friend and ally, teaching him that he is a Stravagante and that he's been called to Bellazza for an important reason, that he has a great part of play in events that are unfolding. All the while, in Lucien's world, the cancer is attacking Lucien's body... This book has a fantastic ending that makes you smile and cry. Extracts from the book are on Mary Hoffman's site www.stravaganza.co.uk Tessadragon |
