replied on: 9/16/2005 7:36:13 PM I just sent them of an email as well on your behalf - I told them that if they get an order from someone on the West coast of England, to make sure that they wrap it up really nicely and ship it off fast. |

replied on: 10/23/2005 1:45:12 PM You can ask anything. Well, almost anything. The ideal reader is an adult, not a child or a teenager. As the series progresses, it becomes much more involved and much more thoughtful, though neither of those criterion preclude a young reader from enjoying the books. I think much of what the characters ultimately are going through beyond the first and possibly even the second book, is more relevant to an adult, with regard to choices and the personal basis upon which we, as adults, make them. Readers have said to me that they find the vocabulary to be a bit difficult, although I don't quite see where myself. But I am thrilled when younger people read GemQuest and find it interesting, entertaining and provocative. I may be underestimating the abilities and intelligence of younger readers of fantasy today. |

replied on: 10/23/2005 3:18:07 PM I find the vocabulary in your books is excellent, your use of language is refreshing.I would have said that the series was aimed at adults, not teens. |

replied on: 10/23/2005 4:42:52 PM Thanks for answering my question, I wanted to be sure I didnt comment on something about the book only to find that it's written specifically for YA. I differ from your thoughts Magi on the writing style. I had some difficulty, not with the vocabulary Gary, you mentioned others have commented on having difficulties too. Do you mind me asking what they were? |

replied on: 10/23/2005 5:02:27 PM It definitely is. And thank you. Language is very important to me. I try so hard to say things in ways that sound as lyrical as possible. Creating sentences that have meanings that resound beyond the particular circumstances of the story is something that I strive for. I think though that teens can read the books, but perhaps on a different level than adults might. But many books that I read as a teenager, I subsequently reread as an adult and I found that they seemed almost like different books. That did not stop me from being motivated by them when I was young, or appreciative of them too. I just wasn't mature enough to understand fully the secondary meanings within the texts. |

replied on: 12/30/2005 5:45:45 PM So have you been reading Rune? I read your comments and reviews on other sites, and I think that what bothers you about some of my contemporaries may not bother you about my books. Correct me if i'm wrong, but that's the sense that I get. |

replied on: 12/31/2005 12:00:07 AM quote:Yes I've updated SFBookcase myself in the past on some authors I didn't feel were getting enough exposure like Paul Kearney and R Scott Bakker plus some Aussie authors. It's a brilliant resource I must admit. I'm now planning to get hold of Gary's books in the first half of 2006, so I can finally make a proper contribution here..

replied on: 12/31/2005 8:58:48 AM quote: Ive started reading The Shards First impressions with The Shards, there's a lot of discussion about good and evil. Also the why for's of the actions of the Lalas. I do feel this slows the plot a little. These issues can be shown through actions too. |

replied on: 2/19/2006 11:40:11 PM quote: I would like to echo that sentiment! I now realize that (after reading everyone else's comments) I was extremely lucky in being able to purchase all three books at the same time at my local barnes and noble... of course now i am fiending for the next and hopefully all subsequent books! When you began writing, did you plan exactly how many books would be in the series before you started or was it more of an organic process? |
