Unlike many authors today, I was fortunate that my publisher allowed me to work with the artist from the beginning to create these incredible covers for my books. His name is Robert Sammelin.

I love the covers, they look really interesting and unusual
Must make a big different to be able to have a hand in the art work for your books. It will be like seeing the job through to the end

Robert was recommended to me by the dark fantasy author Steve Savile. In fact they just published a new short book together, The Fragrance of You, which reads like a film noir.

Robert read my books and then sent me ideas which we subsequently worked from. In the case of each book, he had at least two which I could barely decide between, so we used one for the cover and one for the back. The backs are all darker and more ominious.

It astounds me that most authors take no part in the creation of their covers, not usually out of choice. As I said, I am fortunate that I have an author-centric publisher.

Someone described the covers once as both oddly beautiful and beautifully odd. I thought that captured them well.

Wow! I love the covers too! I'm definitely gonna plead with my editor to be able to preview the covers.

Did you have an idea before talking with Robert Sammelin, of what you wanted the books to look like? Or did you have to look through a number of ideas?

I knew exactly what I wanted them to feel like, and I conveyed that to Robert. I didn't want traditional fantasy covers, and I wanted them to be reflective of the mood and theme of my series.

He came up with the idea all by himself after our conversations.

Good on you Gary, they're some of the best covers I've seen in the Fantasy Genre.

Those are neat covers. I like them. They're kind of mysterious in a way.

Thanks. I think they really capture the moods of the respective books. Someone once described them as beautifully odd and oddly beautiful. I thought that was right on target.
