What are your future plans Gary. How many books will be in the Gemquest series? Are you planning something different?

I am in the middle of the fifth book now. Honestly, I am not sure if it will end in this one or not. It seems more and more unlikely. I have written almost 300 pages so far, and I don't see a conclusion in the next 300 pages. I feel almost as if I have just started, things have been happening so quickly.

I write quite a few of children's books. They are so enjoyable to write that I like to take a break after I finish one in the GemQuest series and write a few more. The first one in a new series comes out in August of 2006. I worked hard on it with my editor, as the children's market is so very different from the one I currently sell in, and I am very pleased with it. I already wrote two more in the same series, and I would like to write more still.

I have a million ideas for another fantasy, but I am not ready to begin it yet. I need to bring GemQuest to a conclusion first.

Its good to hear you have so many ideas for projects. It would be harder if you were struggling.
Do you ever get frustrated because you have so many ideas for different projects but dont have enough time to start them all?

Yes, I get very frustrated. I don't have nearly enough time to do everything that I want to do. I wrote a proposal for my agent last year for a totally different kind of book, and she loved the idea. But when I started to seriously think about writing it, I had second thoughts. It would have taken a year to write and I told her that she has to sell it first, before I start writing. I wrote the first chapter as part of the proposal.

As far as children's books are concerned, those are a joy to write and I love doing them. Each is about 25,000 words, so they are nothing like my fantasy books which average 170,000 words.

Time! There is never enough of it.

Yikes...Am I pleased that the series will run for longer? or dissappointed that I have too wait longer to find out what happens?
No I'd rather that you made it longer than have to much crammed into book five, sometimes endings seem to rushed

Trust me, it will only end when it's time for it to end. I am not anxious to give up these characters and this world. I am very close to them. That may sound a bit odd, but it's true. I know them well by now and they are very much a part of my life. I couldn't leave them stranded, and I can't leave their problems unresolved, one way or another.

When I began the series, I didn't even know it was going to be a series. Then I thought it would end with the second book. Finally, I gave up trying to figure out when it would end, and I reconciled myself to writing this series until the right moment came for it to end.

I know many of my friends plan this way in advance and they decide to write three books and no more. I couldn't do that. I still can't do that.

I am off to Glasgow tomorrow. If anyone is going to be there for the convention, let me know.

I read your interview at the FantasyBookSpot site. It was very good, and I was really pleased to see them mentioning your work

First, Glasgow was fun. I had little to do at this convention, as they did not give me a slot for a reading. But I did sign 18 books for the bookseller who was representing me in the Dealer's Room and I had a chance to visit with some of my friends and fellow authors. I left after two days and went to London where I met with some other fellow fantasy friends.

Fantasybookspot.com is a new and excellent site. They are very prolific with their reviews and very fair in my opinion. Each new site dealing with this genre is a positive thing, and sooner or later the more established sections of the industry will realize the importance of this means of communication. They will be posting a review of all three books in my series shortly as well.
