replied on: 8/4/2005 11:48:45 PM I've read a few of the spellsingers, and really enjoyed them. however i picked up a sci-fi/futuristic one last month and just couldn't get into it. i must admit though, i was extrememly impressed by a very small detail in the work. he discusses future schools, in this novel, the children study at home, there is just to much knowledge out there to fit it into a ciriculum. the children therefor study what interests them. at 12/13 they go to 'school' where they learn the practicalities of society. ie: how to get married/divorced/set up a gas bill/draw up a budget/behave on public transport/use public transport. in other words all of the things that it is accepted that children learn from their parents, and often don't. |

replied on: 5/6/2006 3:06:40 PM I read his original "Pip and Flinx " book, the name escapes me right now, and enjoyed it. I think I have 2 more in various formats. I originally remember him as the writer of novelizations of at least 2 or three movies. He was kind of a decent fall back author if you were looking for something comfortable and not too challenging at the time. (Sometimes I like to keep my mind on "idle".) |

replied on: 7/19/2006 8:31:49 PM Alan Dean Foster is one of my favorite authors. I couldn't get into the Spellsinger series, though. I like his Pip/Flinx novels best, but my favorite of his books is "Nor Crystal Tears"--a first contact novel. I've been in college for the last five years and I'm a bit out of it as far as newer books. I didn't realize he had a new series started (the Taken series; "Lost and Found" is the first book, "The Light-Years Beneath My Feet" is the second) but they look intriguing and I've put them on my list to get. |
