So what is Science Fiction anyway?

this has been puzzling me a lot lately. what exactly is science fiction. is it simply something using technology which is not available now? in which case, james bond could in some instances be called science fiction. is it the political and sociological comment that makes it? i'd really be interested in your views.

I've always thought of Sci- Fi has been futuristic stories that use a lot of technical jargon.

I find the technical jardon used is what puts me off Sci-Fi I just find it doesnt make for smooth reading.
I love watching Sci-fi movies etc, but hate reading it.

I think it's hard to define sci-fi. I always thought of it as using advanced technology. I think it can do almost anything fantasy can do, but it's limited by the laws of physics.

and yet, in the frank herbert novels, a large dollop of 'magic' is used, not only in dune, but other works as well.

I dislike the tech jargon too :-(

As to what is sci-fi, i'd say it's:
biology, chemistry, forensics, ESP, paranormal, astronomy, technology etc. anything that has ever been studied by a scientist and that can be fictionalised in the means of something to intrigue/puzzle the reader.

hmm, i guess sci-fi is one of those things that people think thay know, but when it comes to uttering the meaning- they get stuck. For me there's a thin line between fantasy and sci-fi, but the thing is that it can't be always black and white- there's a big gray section which encorporates some of both, so determining the genre of some books would be a toughie

but i haven't really answered the question, now have i?

The best definition of Science Fiction that I have is that it is the extrapolation or interpolation of science as we know it. It does not have to be very specific. It could be a time travel story where you merely say that your character stepped into the time machine and travelled into the past. If you say he waved his magic wand and travelled into the past you have Fantasy. We know there are no magic wands (but we don't care) we don't know if someday someone can make a time machine or not (again we don't care). As long as it might be possible it's Science Fiction. If we know it's not possible it's fantasy. Both require suspension of disbelief, but that's the best part.

Started with the classics many years ago. I have read a lot of different types over the years. If you've seen the "bibliophil" website, I've got a large percentage of my collection on there. (Some of my books are too old to have ISBN numbers which makes them hard to log.) Depending on my mood and situation I have entered my types of universes over the years. Variety is definitely the spice of life.
