The only sci-fi I seem to be able to get away with is futuristic, with not too much technical babble. Otherwise I just can;t get into the story.

Have you tried any Ray Bradbury. A lot of his stuff uses concept without details and concentrates on the story. The Martian Chronicles is a good example. A series of semi related stories in a science fiction setting with just enough sci-fi detail and a lot of story. They're almost space fables.
