First books are first books, Gollum. I think we'd all do things differently if we had the opportunity to go back and do it again. But there is something to say for innocence and naivete. It's certainly more spontaneous.

Seriously, you may find the language a bit stilted in the beginning book. It changes dramatically as the series progresses. Style is something you grow into as an author, and without the benefit of an experienced editor pounding on you early on, it's trial and error until you find your way.

Some people who love the series, prefer the first book actually because it is more innocent, and thus more organic in some ways. With me, I try to make each subsequent one better, better written, better edited, tighter and deeper. So the one I'm working on is always the one I'm most fond of. I'll see how I feel in then years.

No that's a fair point Gary and something I take into account when writing a review, especially if it's essentiually a debut novel/series.

So far I'm reasonably impressed. What I really like about the book to date (approx 1/3 way through) is the obvious thought Gary has put into the world he is trying to create and some of the characterizations. I think there's a reasonable level of originality that I often don't see from other newcomers in fact. I also like the philosophical nature of the book, reminds me a little of his friend and colleague, the one and only R. Scott Bakker. Relative complexity at beginning of the book appeals to me but I can see how it might put some readers off.

I don't want to say anymore until I've completed the book, otherwise it's unfair to Gary IMO.

OK back to reading and later watching the Aussies vs. Japan in the World Cup.

I'll post again towards the end of the week...

Funny you should mention Scott, Gollum. We became friends because we shared so many fundamental ideas. We have a similar background - both of us were academics, both in philosophy departments.

I had a very different game plan with my series than he had with his though. I wanted to write something that seemed very traditional, and then pushed the envelope. If the envelope is totally new, then you don't need to push it.

Our philosophical sensibilities are quite similar, and we talk about them with one another all the time. But our writing styles are totally different. That's not to say that we haven't helped each other on the way.

The pace of my books is different. The urgency develops slowly as the situation in my world deteriorates. But it's subtle. I don't think you even realize how precarious things have become until the fourth book. The small (and big) victories on the way are cathartic, but they can be deceptive too.

Enough said......
