If you're starting to write a book and you're not happy with the first chapter, but you know what you want your story to be about, just keep writing the story to the end, because then as you progress you get more focused.
And then re-write the first chapter and whatever else you're unhappy with.

Following on from that tip. One advise is to not edit your story first time around. Write it all through and edit it later. That way your eyes are fresh on the older sections and you will pick up on more changes that are need

i second that- i never was happy with the first few chapters that i wrote , so i decided to just keep on writing and sometime in the future totally rewrite the first ones from scratch

Anyone have any tips on how to keep a story going? Usually when I start my stories I never finish them. I get kind of stuck I guess.

what i've found that can be quite challenging but extremely positive aswell is when the story has a myriad of other stories within it to keep it company

or you could just kill/add characters killing them is always fun, unless it's sad, that is...

If in the middle of a story, you slow down, just get away from the computer for a bit. I even found meditation quite helpful, because it got me thinking about what I could let happen next, what possibilities there were.

I enjoy killing characters too, Fobe *grin* (sadistic, aren't we??) but do the readers?

Another tip for keeping the writing up is to give yourself a chocolate biscuit (or whatever treat you can get cheaply) once you've got a page done (or a paragraph if you're really having trouble.)

I give myself little breaks even when writing's coming fluently, because I feel it helps me regulate my writing patterns

Also (sorry about the complete flooding of tips), read something that makes you laugh. You write best when you're in a good mood because then even if things aren't going so well on the writing front, you're still having a laugh.

Hope this helps people,

Tessa

Have a plan for your story. Have a beginning, a middle and an end.
It may help to have your end planned out then you can work towards it
