Talismans of Shannara - Terry Brooks
posted on: 4/27/2006 5:19:37 PM

Talismans of Shannara is the final 5th book in the Heritage of Shannara series, where the series reaches its culmination as Par, Wren and Walker Boh have finally achieved the tasks set to them by the long dead druid Allanon. Wren has brought back the Elves, but finds that the Federation has sent an army ten times their size and Creepers to destroy them. While Walker Boh struggles to escape the Druid Keep that is sieged by 4 extremely powerful shadowen - the Four Riders of the Apocalypse, Par Ohmsford is riddled with doubts with the newfound abilities of his wishsong.

Well, now. The final book didn't really met my expectations as the climax of the whole series, but proved to me yet again that Brooks' linear stroytelling and mostly banal dialogue may turn off the less persistant reader. But oh was I persistant - i wanted to know how the whole damn thing ended!
At times the story seemed very rushed, as if he hadn't really payed attention to his writing at all and his overall style was mediocre at best. Though his High Druid of Shannara series is better than this, Straken will be the last book by Brooks' i'll ever read
One thing that really pisses me off about Brooks' writing is that every goddamn character is afraid of his magic and throughout the story wages war with it inside themselves. And that isn't just confined to the Heritage of Shannara series, it's in every ******* book his ever written about Shannara!!!!

I agree Brooks is pretty generic and not all thsat original but at last you know what you're going to get with a Brooks book and there's some comfort in that. I usually read Brooks as a break b/w heavier reads.

THanks for posting your thoughts on this book

I got that I didnt want to read anymore Shannara books because they all seemed the same. I would like Brooks to move onto something different as I quite like his style

I've read pretty much everything by Brooks and I think his Runnnig with The Demon is his best series by some way.

I read The Word series too and think it's his best works.
Ive also read Landover series, thought the first book was quite good, but it lost focus after that
