Something has murdered Saul's father and left Saul to pay for the crime. But a shadow from the urban wate breaks into his prison cell and leads him to freedom. The shadow is called King Rat. In the nightland behind London's façade, in sewers and slums and rotting dead spaces, Saul must learn his true nature. * * * * * * As always Mieville's vivid descriptions makes for strange, unusual characters. He gives London a new face and makes the world where Saul lives both interesting and distasteful. I really enjoyed the Pipe Piper character, he is vicious, but in the end never really explained. I found the King Rat character difficult to grasp, which was probably partly due to his dialogue. Quite often I wasn't sure what he meant. The king of the Spiders and Birds didn’t come into the plot until half way, which was shame as I felt they could have contributed more to the story. Saul the main character is easier to understand and connect with. The descriptions of his scenes as he changes, adapting to his new world feel wonderfully grimy and dirty. I felt this was an interesting take on an old tale, very modern but yet still had an hint of traditional. Well worth reading. |
