They set sail hoping to reach land before the egg hatches.Dragons must be put to harness as soon as they hatch or they will turn feral, but too late the egg hatches. Laurence has had his officers drew lots to see who would be the one to harness the dragon.The one choosen will have to become the dragon's constant companion, his aviator.A Dragon will accept no other.The air crops are highly respected but not really acceptable for a respectable genteleman. To Laurence's horror the dragon ignores his choosen rider and picks him. The story goes on to describe the growing friendship and love that develops between Laurence and Temeraire.Laurence's struggle to be accept by the other aviators.An aviator enters the air crops at an early age and it can take years to be given a dragon.Enters this world is Laurence he has no training,he is a naval officer used to the formality of the navy.The air crops are very informal.Temeraire also finds it all strange, he is different from the other dragons,a breed never seen before outside China. I for one was surprised and delighted by this book,the dragons have some very human characteristics.My only complaint was its not long enough. |
