I couldn't find a thread for Brooks so I created one.

I recently completed Armageddon's Children.

I won't go into the actual story as there's plenty of blurbs around on that but rather focus on a few issues I found reading this latest offering.

This book was a bit patchy in quality for me. The first 100 pages or so are a little like slow moving treacle but from then on the storyline does gather some momentum and interest as multiple threads and characters are integrated into a much better paced second half.

Overall AC is adequate but not a lot more. Perhaps I'm finally becoming tired of Brook's formulaic approach to writing after reading his last 25 books; not surprising perhaps.

Also the pre-shannara world is only explored from the POV of some 50 years following the events of his excellent Word and Void series. I had hoped for an exploration of the initial development of the Knights of the Word movement and the time of faerie when the forbidding was first established. From a practical standpoint that would have required going back into the pre-dawn of history but even if the first 50 pages or so had been developed to better flesh out this backstory and the embryonic development of the Knights before forwarding to the events surrounding Armageddon's Children I would have come away feeling more satisfied. That the journey itself would have been a more substantial one.

The character development is also a little problematic, not enough depth for my taste in some characters and too much trimming with others.

Having said that, there's still enough interest in the latter third of the book not to mention Brook's tried and trued cliffhanger finish to make me want to purchase the next instalment in this series.

Im actually not surprised you've come back with these comments Goll - oh and by the way, so good to see you here - i feel Brook's works have slipped somewhat these past few years. He's lost that special something for me.

A big improvement on the High Druid series, but like Goll I feel he could have done so much more.Plus I also find the characters lightweight
