making a living...
posted on: 11/24/2006 4:45:12 PM

money... or lack there of, is making my life a living hell... Ive gone back and forth between wanting to get a part time job to pay the bills more easily and staying at 100% BRAKDOWN Illustration & Design from home... see Ive worked so many dead end jobs in my life.. I would get a job, get really good at the job (cause it wasnt anything hard) then get bored with the job, start taking way too many sick days at the job and then quit the job... so I really dont want to get into that again... Do you guys have any ideas of jobs I could apply for that would get me out of the house like 3 days a week, that doesnt involve a uniform, where I could actually not mind going for like 8 hours a shift...

I was thinking maybe like a small comic shop.. but who would hire a chick who knows next to nothing about comics? Dog walker perhaps? but that involves going outside at -40 degrees celcius in the winter... Pet store clerk? I love animals, but I dont think I could stand to see them in cages all day...aaaahhhh I dont know what to do!

The other option is to go for studio work again... apply in animation studios or comic studios if there are any here... but that would most likely mean a 9 to 5 job which wouldnt give me much time at all to work on my contracts... I want to draw... but I feel Ive lost my direction... I want to have a goal... I had goals before.. but now they just sem to be more like dreams...

any help would be much apreciated... seriously dudes...

Get a resumé toghether and send your get out to some placement agancies. There are all sorts of staffing organizations that can find you temp work for what ever will suit your needs and they'll be able to get you a good hourly rate too.

List all of your illustration and graphic design skills and let them do the rest.

There may de some testing involved, I'm not sure, different agencies have different methods.

Try it out.

The toughest thing I did way back was pick up my phone and call the company that ended up hiring me to do comic work for 1500 every 2 weeks.

Sometimes thats all it is. Looking in the right place, or better, looking in ALL places. It sucks, but its the way of the artist. Thats what separates us from normal people. We never really rest.

Dont look at others. Just focus on you and what you reeeeaally want to do.
Honestly, I truely believe you will see better days.

I remember Nae Nae was having similar issues. Now she's a big part of Golden Goat Studios. A very respected indi comic company.

Youre going in the right direction. These hell boy cards are going to OOMPH* your name out there.

i agree with nar on that...you are going the right direction...
and by the way...show me a comic store who wont agree to hire a hot girl like yourself ??? can you imagine all the comic geeks (like me lol) who will buy extra...

anyway i know what you mean about a stuffy job who gets boring really fast
for me...teaching is nice teaching martial art is probeblly what i'll do (it's part of my life anyway...and teaching is always something new) so try teaching art to kids or something...
or paintball shooting

Well I heard that some middle schools held afterschool programs and a friend of mine was actually working where I am now. I had asked him about it and told me I was over qualified for the spot. But that wasnt a bad thing and had called up for an interview.

If you lived closeby, you'd be working with me no doubt about it. Theyre always on a lookout for talented folks.
Although its only a part time job, it does pretty well while you do other things, like sketch cards and stuff like that

Call middle schools around your location and find if they have special programs. Even if only for the weekends. Just to get noticed.

asif u couldnt get a job at a comic shop! its just a retail selling job like anything else, and if ur good with people youll be fine (which im sure u are)... and you can just learn more about comics while youre there. plus ive always believed its easier to get that type of job being a young female than a male..thats just my thought though. the other suggestions sound good too

This is the issue I'm facing now. Am I making the right choice doing what everyone told me to do a long time ago? I haven't drawn as much as I have this year in years. Sometimes I feel late to the party as I saw people getting jobs left and right.

I'm trying real hard though. Commission work is nice but I'd like to give those people some value by getting in on a set somewhere. Currently one place responded and I'm waiting until a review is done.

I've got an idea for a sure thing comic but I'm one who can look at my skills and know I'm not where I need to be yet. I'm still shaking the rust off.

Sadly I've worked almost nothing but factory jobs my whole adult life and I may have to go back to one soon. Luckily it's just pill packing, pay is great and it's 4 days a week. I just don't have the energy or drive to draw after working a hard day in a factory and I don't want to face that ever again.
