Need some advice about "racism"
posted on: 1/18/2007 12:42:04 PM

I've been working on shaping out an idea of mine for a story to put into a graphic novel. Well, it's actually one of 3 or 4 stories that would be in the graphic, but this one is the first one, so that's where I started with the building process. The main characters of this particular story are four children from the "poor side of town" who go trick or treating in the "rich neighborhood." I don't know if any of you ever did that as a kid, but it was common place around here. Anyway, I started filling out the details of the characters, all of which I had already created in my mind, so I was just transfering them into writing. After I was finished, I was pleased with the personalities and physical aspects of them. They were coming to life so to speak. Then it dawned on me. The four children are two brothers, their cousin, and the youngest brother's best friend. The best friend is a white kid, and the other three are black. Not because I think of black kids when I think of poor people, they were just what I had always had envisioned for the story. Me personally, I'm white, and growing up I hung out with all sorts of races, and had some very close black friends. But I'm still white. Do you think this would be an issue in this situation, or do you think readers might find it offensive that the "poor kids" happen to be black? I didn't do it out of stereotypes or anything negative, that's just who the characters were to me. I'd greatly appreciate it if you all could let me know what you think.

it's your creativity. if thats how you envision the characters you shouldn't feel you need to change them. thats how i see it. i mean if they were to make a real movie about eminem, not 8 mile, you'd see nothing but a bunch of black dudes and eminem, just like how it is on mtv when they did his biography. the dude who shot himself didn't even exist i'm pretty sure.

What would be stereotypical would be if all the characters were all different races just to be diverse and not offensive. Tell what you need to tell in the story exactly how you envision it otherwise the story will lose its meaning and value, it would look awkward as hell if there were an asian person, a black person, a white person, and latin american person. Or if the cast were half black and half white. People can tell when somebody is going out of their way to be politically correct. Tell a story, don't water it down, from what you described it makes sense three of them black. Two black brothers would obviously have a black cousin and the fact that one of them is best friends with a white person proves its not racist. I like to think of it as four people the colors arent important their characters however are. By molding them into 3dimensional characters you are not being sterotypical by any means.

Thanks for the viewpoints. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. My main concern would be someone seeing it and thinking "Oh, since the story was about poor kids he made them black" which wasn't even anything close to what I was thinking at the time. But, in hindsight, people probably wouldn't even think of it from that angle, and would hopefully just accept the story for what it was. I over analyze things if you can't tell. I'm leaving the story how it is though. Thanks again.

Dude, tell your story and dont worry about what people think man

its your story and your ideas

People can be way to sensitive at times and its time we move past all that by doing things as we mean them

This is very profound, and good advice. Exactly what I was thinking. I'm so sick of all the PC being thrown around these days. I mean you have to think of what will feel real and what will feel fake. Personally I think the idea you have going feels real. Don't worry about what some other closed minded individual will think. Its your story.
