Frustrations of the creative process

Does anyone else ever find themselves ass-deep in a story line or a drawing, only to realize that they really don't like it? This normally happens after you started out being really hyped up about an idea, but the enthusiasm went downhill instead of uphill as you progressed. Another seemingly common factor is when you find yourself forcing it to work. I'm just venting, so feel free to stop reading at any time. I had a really good character concept in my head, and I thought about it non-stop for at least a good week. I started writing out the foundation of the story, and the deeper I got the more and more resemblances started taking place. One part would sound like one thing, another part would sound like another thing, and I realized that while it all seemed original in my own mind, it was in fact just other versions of things already done mashed together. I could have kept forcing my way through it, but the results just weren't what I was looking for, and it's just not the story I wanted to tell. I'm starting to understand why artists erase and throw away so much work now.

I dont even really erase I just throw it and or curb stomp the paper in a very violent fashion. I imagine that writing must be the same because I imagine a character and I come up with some pretty out there ideas, but a lot of the time (most of the time) its extremly difficult to translate an idea into a drawing just like turning an idea into a script. What even annoys me more is sometimes I'll come across the same drawing a few months later and be like hey thats a good drawing why did I light it on fire (not really but sometimes Im tempted to.) I think the problem is sometimes that were trying to make as cool and original as possible and we overthink it. I mean whats the point of acharacter that has these cool details but yet we cant understand him? Im getting frustrated just thinking about this

i dunno man
see with me
i dont really hate my characters even if i dont think they are all that original
usually i finish the design and if i dont like it then i dont look at it again or eventually throw it away if i dont deem it worth keeping

all in all i dont take it too seriously and that helps to keep the frustration down.

It happens all the time. To me especially when I write something on my guitar...I get all hyped and then realize subconsiously I just taught myself another song. When I draw it's hard to create an original pose, angle, or even an original style. Best bet is just keep on truckin. Do what feels right to you. What ever your comfortable with. I'd really like to read some of your stuff.

This is just my thoughts to help you;

1) "Be prepared always to kill your babies." I forget where this famous quote is from - some famous writer. But if you love something too much that you have created you should be prepared to kill it because it may not work.

2)In some ways there is no such thing as original. Everything is derived off of what ever has influenced you. The trick is with art to show your audience your perspective of the subject. That's where originality comes from.

3) Have fun and don't force it. It sound simple but it's harder to practice. Don't get to bent on the process just enjoy it and go with the flow.

4) Put it down. Don't be afraid to get up from those blank pages you have been staring at. Get up go out be open to other means of inspiration.

5) Have fun. it's worth mentioning twice!

Well the way i like to think is if your not liking the process of writing it then there is more than likely no one that will like to read it.

Another thing i do is whenever an idea pops into my head i will go right to thinking of ways to incorperate it into one of my already made stories. I have a cartoon, book, and comic in the works so if i think of something i think if it will work in any of those. If not then i think well how can i work a story around this?

I also try to keep everything open at all times for anything to happen. This kinda sucks when your trying to end a story but it helps me because a new thought pops into my head i dont have to change all of it to make it work.

However yes it has happened to me where i throw out a story because i didnt like something or it wasnt working. Its usuelly when i get to the middle of a story and i dont know how to get from this to that or whatnot. I spent months trying to work out my comic because everything i worked on turned out to just be another version of some comic already out, then finally i took it to another level and decided well this hasnt been done at all lets try it. Lets take ideas that other writers tried to accomplis and couldnt get just right and make it work in this story, etc... So i start sitting there and reading or watching things that failed in the early stages and took them. Plus i have a whole new story of my own.
