replied on: 11/20/2007 6:08:16 PM K, I got it and read it. Lets start from cover to finish. I got the Marc Silvestri variant cover. The cover looks cool and different. Didn't look like your typical comic book cover. Very adultish. Movie poster, even. I guess that's what theyre going for these days. Interior artwork. Marcs pencils are as good as they always were. Nothing new but nothing sh-tty either. However, in highest respect, it kills me to see that he didn't try to convey emotion in any of the character's faces. They all look subtle, bored or too cool to make a gasp or frown. That in itself, made it hard for me to feel anything that was going down in the storyline. His work though, is above your standard comic art. So I'm still happy with it somewhat. Better than some i guess. The colors. This is where I thought things could have been better handled by a long mile. Not to say they were terrible. Just on the wrong artist or vice versa. I wish they went with something more traditional rather than experimental. (experiment with your drawings at home not at work) Some parts, especially the first 3 pages, were a little confusing because the way the tones were handled. Were they in a red ship? Or did they all just get a bad sun burn with their clothes on? You be the judge. However, some pages does feature very nice coloring, but this is the kind of stuff that really competes with the art istelf. Theres no symbiotic experience. That and I guess I'm just used to seeing Marc's work in dark tones. All in all, again, above average. The story. Well, I'm gonna confess. I haven't read a comic book in YEARS. I just don't take them seriously enough to bother. Lack of continuity, a gazillion alternate universes and clashing storylines left a bad taste in my mouth. This has to be the first comic I actually read through in a long time. Amazing. I was sort of drawn into it, but not too much. Please don't get me wrong. I wasn't forcing myself not to enjoy the book. I was actually really excited to see it in my mail box. But the reason for my dull experience, was because all of the above happened. And of course, what happened to me, won't happen to everyone else. Im sure there are many who may find this gem of a comic, a masterpiece. But, I'm an artist and therefore, proned to focusing more on artwork detail than what's actually happening. Which sucks for me cuz' I don't get to enjoy them like others do. But I tried to get into it ignoring the art in hard light and follow along. Here goes with the story... SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT!!! I enjoyed it TO SOME extent. But don't get me wrong. That's probably a good thing considering how jaded I am about reading comics, period. The fact that I was able to read all of it was a big leap o' change for me. So don't go runnin' yer' mouth about how Nar hates readin em' comics. Holy crap, I'm talkin' like Wolverine now! Ermmm, shake it off Nar, shake it off! Honestly, I felt like it was the same stuff I read years ago. The story starts off with Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Nightcrawler and Warren (Angel), flying in their black bird out to check out ground zero of destruction. Looking for a "new" mutant that has wrecked havok and yadda yadda. They land and find a city still burning into ruins and dead babies (Kate would love this comic book...lol). That's right, dead frying little babies. Purists came to town to take out all children and newborns in hopes to take out this dreaded "new mutant" who Im guessing will destroy everything and everyone. Then the Marauders come and kill them, then the new mutant comes and makes mince meat out of all of them and and....well. Thats it for now. The X-men couldnt find any traces of this new super monster, so they take the last remaining survivor (some hot blond...lol. Typical) and fly back out to their mansion. As they fly out, you finally get to see the new mutant!!! A Marc Silvestri trademark style beast that resembles the stuff youve seen in Marc's Darkness comics! *And he's hungry! Very Hungry. Very hungry! *quoted from the comic* The end. Onto the next chapter next month, which Im skippin. Just wasn't my cup of tea, kiddies. On the lighter side! I did purchase a 30 year anniversary Heavy Metal magazine with a special full MELTING POT graphic story with art by Simon Biz!! Overall, I rate the X-MEN Messiah Complex a 7.5 out of 10. Am I being too generous? What did you think of it? |

replied on: 12/6/2007 1:42:12 AM Oh yeah, the story wasnt like "bad", but for a reader my age, which probably shouldnt matter much, was a little flat. However, i showed it to my students at work (yep, im actually still working part time at the school still), and they liked it a lot, so thats a good thing for Marvel. |
