replied on: 11/15/2007 10:58:34 AM Ivana! I myself just bought a Wacom tablet! I bought a 6x8 Intuos Wacom tablet (serial, not usb) with pen for only 172.00 USD! And let me tell ya, its an awesome tool! I was worried that 6x8 was too small, but its actually perfect for my tastes. The entire tablet is larger than that of course, but the working area measures 6x8. Also, mine wasn't USB, and that freaked me out, but it works perfectly on my computer using the serial bus connection and has over 1000 pressure points for sensitivity, which means, if you apply weight on the pen, the lines come out darker and heavier, the same the other way around. Make sure you get the Wacom Intuos series, wether it is Wacom 1, 2 or 3. Dont buy the Wacom graphire model. Reviews mentioned that the Intuos series are the best for photoshop needs. I bought mine on ebay, like new. And let me tell you.. you guys are gonna see a bunch of new art from me and my little tablet. Right now, Ive gotten the hang of using the pen, but i got a long ways to go before I can master it to produce masterpieces. Im practicing speed painting too. BTW, if youre using a MAC computer, Artsta can help you with that area. Goodluck! |

replied on: 11/15/2007 5:40:40 PM you bought yourself a tablet? glad to hear that size is good, coz Terrence from Raven told me that he's not much happy with big screen and it's better if it's smaller... also, i was wondering about usb...so kool if it works the same with serial connection! i'm not sure if i'll take Intuos3 A4 Special Edition with airbrush pen or Intuos3 A5 USB, but sure it will be Intuos3!! on both of them the resolution is more then 5000dpi and it recognize more then 1024 pen pressures too...thanks for the information that Intuos is the best for Photoshop, i didn't think of that at all.... uh i was reading some tutorials (like this: http:forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3629421&postcount=3) about first work with tablet, and i know it will take time to used to it... uh Nar i can't wait to see what you will do with that.. not using MAC! thanks Nar for that info, i'm sure i have more questions, can't remember now... |

replied on: 11/15/2007 10:39:26 PM I have an Intuos and a Graphire and I have to say there is absolutely no noticeable difference between them, the Graphire is every bit as good to draw with. And does all the same stuff. The only thing I would say which makes Intuos arguably better is that there are a few different types of pen available for intuos, such as air brush etc... but in all honesty they are expensive and not worth it. I have an air brush and I can tell you straight the air brush is no different to the regular pen aside from it has a scroll wheel instead of buttons. The scroll wheel is slightly more useful than ordinary buttons, but it's offset by the air brush being fat and uncomfortable to draw with. So I hardly ever use it and prefer just drawing with the pen. Graphire only has pen or mouse available, but I think it's better because Graphire pens are all interchangeable. You can use graphire 2 pens on a graphire 4 tablets for example, and vice versa. So it's easy to pick up extra pens and get replacements, and if your tablet breaks you can just update and still use your pens. Intuos pens only work on Intuos tablets of the same series which is a bit lame. If I were going to buy a tablet today I would get the A5 Graphire 4 (there is even a sexy new wireless bluetooth version) A5 (6x8) is the perfect size, A4 is nice but a bit big and impractical (takes up a lot of desk space). A6 is a bit too small and disproportional to screen size which can feel unnatural and overly sensitive to draw with. Make sure you get USB, because many new computers and laptops don't even have serial ports now. my USB Graphire works on PC and Mac just the same, and I even tried it on linux and it works on that too. |

replied on: 11/16/2007 6:22:04 AM i'm thinking of getting a tablet as well... it's expensive as hell in israel though! but i have one question to you guys since from what i can see you need a 6x8 work size and sensetivity and the other differences are pretty much the same, are one of the two tablets you mantioned is left handed friendly? cause i had a tablet one, and it had all the bottons on the left side, for right handed people...so it bugged the hell out of me and i quit using it... so is there a left handed compatible tablet? |

Graphire? hahaa... definitely i will take that advice about the size...so 6x8, ok!! and maybe is the best to buy one with usb coz you never know....i just wasn't sure if the usb affects on quality (you know like on some other computer tools) but i guess i was wrong!! what i'm talking about, who cares, i'm not gonna produce some masterpieces like Nar...so anything is good for start, but in a few years watch out boys!!!i'll be insaaaaane!!!! oh yes ibeenthere i'm sure you can find something, yes! |

replied on: 11/16/2007 8:15:12 AM Interesting, SmackCakes. Before I purchased my tablet, I checked out a few reviews, maybe like 5 before I finally made my decision for the Intuos model. And here's the pages I looked through myself before making my choice. Review 1 Review 2 Review 3 Conceptart.org Review Board review I was convinced the Intuos was the best to go with because of the pressure points and tilt sensitivity features, vs the graphire's 512 pressure points. But then again.. I dont even know if the newer graphires can support more sensitivity. Also, they seem to mention the the Intuos pen is more comfortable and has side button features. Again, I am sooo new at this myself, Im not sure about much other than that I love my Intuos tablet. Oh and btw, I just found out they sell USB adapter dongles for serial tablets to use on newer computers without serial ports. Now thats a relief...although, Im not sure I will still use the same tablet by then if I plan to uprgade to newer models in the future anyways. Well, Im happy with mine. Verrrry happy and I will have something to post soon enough when I get around to it. Thanks for the info Smackcakes, I think I would like to try a graphire for my future laptop since its cheaper. |

replied on: 11/16/2007 11:58:49 AM quote: you are right that intuos is the best, but I think you pay very heavily for what is really a pretty insignificant increase in function. I don't personally believe 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity are necessary. You have to remember that your computer only displays 254 shades between black and white anyway, so even 512 pressures is massive overkill. and for brush size too, a 20 pixel wide brush really only has 20 possible sizes. No one ever draws with 512 pixel wide brush, it would be insane. Photoshop smoothes your brush strokes anyway so I just can't see how there could be any perceivable difference, and I've never noticed any drop in quality when using the Graphire (in fact some times I think it's smoother, but that may just be my settings) Tilt sensitivity is different. Graphire doesn't have tilt control (though direction control can do similar stuff). I feel tilt sensitivity is pretty gimmicky though. It's actually a fairly senseless thing to have control over since the incline of your hand doesn't naturally change a significant amount while drawing anyway. I've never found any practical use for it, or noticed it was missing from my Graphire. Obviously it's nice to have, but it isn't worth the extra cost in my opinion. The tablet I would suggest would be the Graphire4 XL (picture...) ![]() I really think that's perfect, it's the right size, it's stylish, the pen has a rubber grip (your fingers will thank you) and there isn't anything you can draw on the Intuos that you couldn't draw on this (this has everything I needed to do the MK picture) plus it's much better value for money. I kinda wish my Graphire would break so I could justify getting one. quote: The air brush is really just a standard pen with a scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is useful, you can use it to flick from the foreground to the background colour (and anywhere in between) without lifting the pen. the only problem with it is I find it slightly clunky awkward to hold, and it will certainly be less comfortable than the rubber grip pen, but it depends what you are after really. |

replied on: 11/16/2007 1:10:27 PM you're totally right about pen pressures, i know they give all that in description just to pump up everything...i don't know...ok, now you kill my curiosity for airbrush pen, so that option don't work anymore.. my current choice is maybe the Graphire you're speaking about Smack and this one (pic: Intuos A5 USB)...will dig more, maybe i can find more interesting stuff... ![]() |
