Did you read THIS about a guy who built one himself for relatively cheap. I'd love to try it but I don't know if I have the heart to hack up a working tablet.

Oh yea! I actually met the guy who invented the cintiq at the Photoshop Seminar here in Los Angeles. He said it was 2500.00 and it went live on that same day for mass market, however, its slowly populating he said because no many shops carries them.
It was an awesome piece of work, except one thing... after i was working off the screen for a while, i noticed something that bugged me. My palm was sweating and the screen was warming up where my hand was.

Also, it had me wondering... The human hand releases acids with eventually can damage some surfaces of certain objects. Made me think wether the Cintiq screens would end up yellowing or fogging up after a period of long term usage?

Still, those bad boys were cool.

But I also have to admit, I like my Wacom much better because my hand isnt covering the screen while i work. And its cheaper too... lol

500 bucks for a webcam!

For that much, it'd better make me look like a pornstar!

I bought mine off of ebay, new, for $1.50, plus 8 bucks shipping

I was wondering about that too. because when you press on an LCD screen it goes all weird and ripples. So I assume it must have some kind of protective layer over the top. But still I bet you need to clean it loads, it must be a nightmare for fingerprints and stuff.

I also think I'm going to stick with my Intuos. There was a time when I convinced my self that I NEEDED a cintiq. But I've come to realise that throwing an insane amount of money at the best tablet in the world. Isn't going to make me a better artist.

I remember at school kids turning up to art class with these expensive boxes of pencils (you know the ones with everything weight from 2H to 9B). but their pictures never came out any better than mine, which were usually drawn with a crappy HB from the supply cupboard.

The thing is, even if I'd had those pencils I don't think it would have made a lot of difference to my work. Even to this day I have no idea what I would possibly need 12 different pencils for, or why it's necessary to have an 8B as well as a 9B.

That's why I don't think I'll ever buy a Cintiq, and also why I would urge anyone to think twice about getting the Intuos, when the Graphire is really all you need (or at least all I need).

Incidentally @ Nar, now you have a tablet you should have a look for a program called Deep Paint. It used to be about $200 but the developer retired it and released it as freeware. It has a lot of very cool brushes and brush effects and plugins for photoshop. I think you'd like it

also let me know if you can't find it coz i have the installer

PS. I agree heavily about those pencils.
Bare necessities is all you need to rock.
I only use HB leads. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeaaaaaah I couldnt find the installer. Seems that they pulled it down from cnet (which many sites redirected me to)

BTW... Im thinking about creating a digital art only Thread for people who work on tablets and such media. I really want to learn as much as I can about its advantages and limitations.

Speaking of limitations, Ive been working on a file that is 600dpi resolution and about 30 inches wide and 50 inches long. It wont let me go bigger than that and I was wondering why.

Is the file tooo big? The file itself is only 280mb in size. I have similar file sizes for stuff that got colored professionally and sent to me.

When I open the file, the memory on the bottom status bar reads 1.5GB/280mb.

Should I work on 300dpi range? What is the standard for top professional users? Any clues?

The max size of a photoshop canvas is 30,000 x 30,000 pixels. If your canvas is 50 inches at 600 dpi then you have (600 x 50 =) 30,000 pixels. I'm guessing that is why it won't let you go bigger.

I don't really know what to say about DPI. I normally work at 100dpi just for speed. Most people seem to expect 300dpi for print, though I have in the past just resized stuff up from 100 to 300, and they didn't notice and it looked fine to me *shrug*. I think anything above 100 is good. 300 is very good, I can't see anyone complaining, about a 300dpi image. But it really depends on what you plan to do with it.

I've never heard of the other brands around here.
I'd go with the Wacom Graphire 4.

Id go just about anything Wacom as a matter of fact. The Wacom is made in Japan too. For some reason, that brings me just a bit more comfort when buying expensive products.

Maybe Smackcakes knows about the other ones?
