Can you help?
replied on: 11/22/2007 4:40:41 PM

I found this book online. Im going to look into it some more. I think it would be a nice addition to my collection of art books. This is all about digital painting and the nature of it.

I managed to borrow my brothers tablet. So i was wondering do you guys know of any good tutorials or have any advice on just straight up drawing with the tablet. It doesn't look right and the brushes ive been using are horrible maybe its just cause im not used to it but I was wondering if there is any advice for making it feel more natural other than practice which I realize is probably going to be a large part in getting used to it but maybe there are brushes that can make it at least look more like a pencil.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I've had about everything there is to have, tablet wise and I'll say that the Cintiq is the absolute best purchase I've EVER made. Not a second that I've regretted it once. BUT, it is pricey, so if you're not serious about digital art, you should probably start with something a little more affordable.

Get a normal black brush with a hard edge (small) and drop the opacity to about 12% that way you can build up your lines more slowly, it should feel more like a pencil.

If you want some handy tips to work faster.

You can use the [ and ] keys the go up and down in brush size.

Pressing F repeatedly will cycle you through full screen modes. (i like to work on the grey)

Pressing tab will switch your palettes on and off.

You can zoom in and out easily by pressing ctrl and + or -

it helps to get some of your most commonly used short cuts down. my top ones would have to be.

ctrl+Z (undo/redo) <- I changed this to step backwards though.
ctrl+A (select all)
ctrl+D (deselect all)

Holding alt with the brush tool will give you the colour picker for a bit.

Holding space will give you the hand tool, which makes it easy to scroll about while you are zoomed in.

Hey Smacks do you have any tips on blending values? I want to give what im working on a nice finished look as opposed to a sketchy looking piece. I tried using the smudge tool but either I have a bad setting on it or it isnt that good of a technique to blend values.

I find with the smudge tool you usually want it set below 50% for blending, anything above gives you a smear which isn't that useful (especially not when liquefy does it better) below 25% isn't really that noticeable it's just a soft blur really. I usually have it set around 35%

The size of the brush is important too, I would try and use a fairly large brush when you can (soft edge for blending) but the smudge tool seems to use quite a lot of ram so you might not be able to go too big, depending on your computer.

The only problem I find with the smudge tool is it does leave things very soft and blurry, I normally use the add noise or unsharp mask to crispen things up again, and also go round the edges with the eraser to make sure they aren't blurred. good hard edges go a long way to making things look finished.

EDIT:

If your computer isn't able to handle large smudge brushes properly you could, try working on a smaller image and the blowing it up later to finish off. That is what I did with the picture of the face that I posted. I think the original was only about 400 pixels high. Because I painted it on a 600mhz P3 which was a nightmare to do anything on.

Other blending techniques, you can mask stuff and use the guassian blur, then bump the contrast back up, that can be quite nice, but not very precise.

You can also use very soft transparent brushes set to a very low opacity. Usually around 2-3% for black and 5-8% for white. that is very precise but takes ages, probably need to use that for fine details though.

I hope that helps.
