I really think its amusing how crap like this, makes everyone think "the end is near". So I was wondering how some of you feel about this little experiment? Do you think its a doomsday machine? Or do you think its going to be successful? Or is it just a really big waste of money and man power, that could be used on something more worth while?

Personally I think we need to stop reaching for the stars, and focus more on the problems we have here on earth. So much time and money is invested in crap like this. They could be working on cures for cancer, aids, and other crap. Back to you!

If you don't know what I am talking about, here is a link .

i gotta telly you, i think there are some thing men shouldnt be messing around with...big bang, definitly on the top of the list

but like my friend said:"they'll probebly start the expiriment and then you'll see at the end of the machine a small led light will lit and all the scientist will be thrilled and the reporters will just stand there and be like, was that all? where's the bang? "

so i'm kinda split about it, cause in regards to what you said about focusing on problems here like cancer, aids and so on, well sometime the greatest inventions come from something totally different, i mean einstien developed his theroy of reletivity from taking a train ride...

I personally think it's very exciting. The particles they are hoping (predicting) to discover will constitute the first steps towards new technologies, like synthetic gravity, and flaying cars, and also alternative and clean fuels. They may even discover things that weren’t predicted but that might change the way we see the universe forever.

As for it being safe... I'm not an expert, so... don't have a clue. I'm a little concerned that most of the argument for it being safe is that high energy particles have been colliding with stuff in space every day for millions of years and nothing bad seems to have happened, and that LHC is just the same thing... except it clearly isn't the same thing coz it's not in space etc... but I'm sure all the scientists know what they are doing. And if they don't we will all be crushed into a singularity and there will be no one to blame anyway.

I think projects like this are very positive, it is really only because of a handful of people who do work like this that we aren't all still living in caves, without all the cool stuff we take for granted like internet and DVDs and microwaves and central heating.

I would like to see more people reaching for the stars, instead of bickering and killing each other over petty stuff like oil and money and religion.

I find it comforting to think that one day perhaps billions of years from today, long after the earth is gone. The universe might still be populated by intelligent life which evolved on earth. But the chances are pretty slim. What is more likely is that while we are all her bickering and fighting, some natural disaster will come along and wipe us out. Then everything we have done, everything we have worked for, and even fought over will just be forgotten, like the dinosaurs, and intelligent life may never evolve on Earth again. I think what we have is special, and projects like this bring us a tiny step closer to preserving it.

The dinosaurs weren't equipped to cope with what was coming, and they are gone now. Humans are different, we do have the tools to survive. The big question is... Will we use them?

I love this project!!!!

Finally someone is willing to see if string theory is true and the possibility of a parallel universe existing is exciting.

They tried to build one here in Texas and because of money issues they ordered it to be dismantled. It is sad that people rather spend money on trivial things like American Idol and Britney Spears rather than science.

I am also happy that at least we are trying something new that might give us a leap in terms of technology that was not inspired by war like the atomic bomb.

The applications to this are amazing if it worked.

this one is unique, i really dont know what to think about the whole other dimension thing (the first thing to come to my head is fugitoid(and half life)so i REALLY dont know)
i can just hope they really know what there doing and dont suck us into a black hole, and didnt waste a wholelatta cash for nothing.

I still dont know what is going on!!!! AHHH!!!!
J/K

But i do agre with Joe. They spend billions upon billions of dollars on this thing when it really does advance us as humans. It just adds more ideas for Leisurely and dreamy consumer products which is something we really dont need more of. Who needs a flying car, so that they dont have to sit through traffic........just distroys the virtue of patience which nobody in the world really has anymore. Who needs to know of an alternate reality or such thing when our reality is already so messed up.

All my opinion btw.

But those billions of dollars can go to something more helpfull, like rebuilding destroyed and Neglected places. Put the money towards research on fighting Global Warming. Get homeless off the street. And if these smart ass geniuses can come up with things like this....imagine if there superior brain power was geared towards a greater goal.

It is a neat idea....just dont think that this should have taken prority over anything.

I agree in part with you smack. This could yield exciting results. Im intrigued like you. I still think there are more important things that could use this kind of funding. Like LAW said. Who is to say they will use this to benefit though. Could just be another weapon. Could be the catalyst for another war. Who knows? We all know the possibilities. Its in our history. I'm sure Einstein didn't intend to have a bomb created out of his research. That is what happened.

yeah dudes but at least the idea of not relying on fossil fuels anymore thanks to the alternate energy source this might open up the research to is worth the expense

think about how global warming might be averted if we cut down on vehicles that use petroleum to vehicles powered by antimatter

it is science fiction made reality
and yeah Einstein or even Tesla never wanted their ideas made into weapons but eventually we need to out grow that mentality.

and Yeah I think Tesla Rocked man, that guy was pure genius as well

I think it is unfair to say this project takes money away from more worthy causes, when so much money is wasted on failed projects and other stuff that isn't nearly as important as LHC.

For example... William W, McGuire was a former CEO of United Health Group. He was forced to resign after a scandal involving the fraudulent backdating of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of company stock.

After his resignation, he received a farewell severance package estimated to be around 1.1 billion dollars.

The London 2012 Olympics is expected to cost upwards of 9 billion pounds. That's around 16 billion US dollars to you guys. and it's almost certain to end up way of budget. And how long is the Olympics going to last? Like a week?

China just wasted 164 billion US dollars on a telecom system which they are now not going to use.

The US government has spent 250 billion on the war in Iraq. 50 billion went to private contractors.

By contrast LHC is expected to cost somewhere between 4-8 billion dollars, and it isn't just a failed project, it will further our understanding of the universe and might do a lot of good.

Also Law it is not just about leisurely consumer products. Don't you think having cars which run on clean fuel and don't use rubber tires which are harmful to the environment will help in the fight against global warming. Don't you think it would be nice if we didn't have to concrete over parks and playing grounds just to build more roads and multi story parking lots.

Also no one is going to be flying over traffic because that would be dangerous, and against the highway code, and probably violate air traffic control regulations too. It would be a whole new system where cars and roads are replaced by something better.

And finding new dimensions isn't about finding alternate realities. It's about proving the existence of very tiny coiled dimensions of space, which effect the behaviour of very tiny particles.

That might sound like pointless bullshit to you, but actually advances in this area will have a profound knock on effect in other areas of science, such as medicine and engineering.

They have been throwing money at trying to cure Aids and Cancer for years, My dad told me that when he was at school they used to be raising money for children in Africa. That was 50 years ago, and what has change? Nothing. They can't even cure the common cold let alone Aids.

Large breakthroughs in technology might actually be the first step in changing all that. LHC a step towards improving human technology across the board. To say it isn't for the greater good, is just insane.

I understand everything your saying Smackcakes. I don't disagree with all those positive points one bit. We need medical advancement along with the technological. I want clean air just as much as you. I want non contaminate fuels. I dont see why we put out so much money up for crap like the Olympics. Its ridiculous. Makes no sense to me. This is the world we live in. All I am saying is what could happen. There is always someone who has a different agenda.

I agree that nuclear weapons weren't exactly a good thing. Though having said that, they aren't really a bad thing either. As the saying goes... guns don't kill people, people kill people. All knowledge is power, and that power can be used for evil as well as good. but I don't think that is a reason to quite the pursuit for knowledge. Nuclear devices obviously constitute a lot of power.

I don't think people are necessarily inclined to use technology for evil though. Nuclear weapons haven't been used in anger for over 60 years now. and it doesn't look like they ever will be. The nuclear apocalypse that everyone worried about during the cold war seems to have been averted.

Nuclear devices may still end up being a power for good. They are our only hope for deflecting large asteroids, should we find them on a collision course with earth, so they may end up saving many more lives than they have taken.

It seems all our greatest technological advances have been made because of war. Even the industrial revolution only ever happened because of advancements in precision cylinder making (for guns) made it possible to also make air tight pistons and the steam engine was born.

I think it's nice that projects like the LHC are striving to make technological advances, and it has nothing to do with war for once.

I thot of all that too.......we'll just see what it leads to. I think 80% of humanity would love to use the power from this sorta thing for evil rather than good. I am not good with words so it is hard to explain my point. I know that the idea was ment for a great cause but i also know that it is not gonna be used for just that...I just believe that with the way humans are now, the bad things that are going to come with this are gonna out way the good. I think there are other, less harmfull renewable resources that are not being used in place of the harmfull non renewable resources. Simple resources...

I hope that this will be used as you say Smack. That would be great!! I will be optimistic and realize the possibilites...just wont be suprised when things go wrong
