Yeah, have heard.

All of this stuff going on in Indonesia is fairly strange and complex, still trying to find out more. You had East Timor which the Indonesians had occupied fairly recently and thus them re-gaining there independance again was something that I think they deserved. On the otherhand Aceh seems to have been part of Indonesia for a long time and only a percentage of the people want there independance. I think both sides have performed some pretty henious acts which clouds the issue even more. Hopefully they can come to a peacfull solution where all the people involved from Indonesia as well as the pro-seperatists and non-separatists in Aceh are happy. Saying who is right though is tough as there seems to be many points of view.

Hey Gage,

Welcome back, long time no see

Aceh (or Acheh as the ones seeking independance call it) is a province of Indonesia who want to gain independance. If you do a bit of search for the "Free Aceh Movement" or "Acheh Sumatra National Liberation Front" you should find a bit of stuff relating to them. It is all confused because the movement seems to have now split in two, one willing to negotiate with Indonesia, one not. There has also been a bit of fighting recently in the province with Indonesia sending in the troops to put down the uprising. Both sides accusing the other of attrocities. Foreign journalists are banned from the area, as are tourists who are arrested on site.

Kylie,

Unfortunately this seems to have been swept under the carpet by the media now that North Korea and the Solomon Islands issue has occured. It is also not helped by the fact that Indonesia now controls all media access to the province, banning all foreign news reporters and heavily restricting Indonesian reporters, so any news is hard to get.

It appears that Indonesia has mounted the biggest military action since they took control of East Timor. It is believed around 540 people have been killed so far. Indonesia claims they were all rebels, the rebels claim about 30 were rebels the rest were ordinary citizens. It is estimated approximately 100 soldiers have been killed.

Talks were attempted in Tokyo but they broke down, not helped by the fact that Indonesia arrested 3 of the negotiators for the rebels on the way to the airport. They were released but when the talks broke down were re-arrested and are now on trial for treason and terrorism and face the death penalty if convicted.

Out, Nuisance
