Visit by US President Bush to meet Canadian PM Chretien "doubtful": press
Wed Jun 25, 1:46 PM ET

TORONTO (AFP) - After putting off a planned trip in May to Ottawa, it is "doubtful" US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) will meet with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien before the latter''s retirement next year, local media reported.

AFP/File Photo

Relations between Bush and Chretien never seemed to get off on good footing and were further strained when Ottawa refused to support the US-led invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) without prior UN authorization.

Then, just ahead of the G8 summit in Evian, France earlier this month when the two leaders would meet, Chretien criticized the United States for its 500 billion US dollar projected budget deficit.

Canada is expected to post a sixth consecutive budget surplus for the fiscal year ended March 31.

The Globe and Mail newspaper said Wednesday a "source confirmed (to it) last night that the visit is now ''highly doubtful'' and that Mr. Chretien''s criticism (of US economic policy) had changed the ''lay of the land.''"

CTV News also reported that it is "doubtful" Bush will travel to Canada in November and that it likely will not come before Chretien steps down as prime minister in February 2004.

Canadian and US officials said Bush hoped to reschedule his trip to Canada in the fall to meet both Chretien with the next prime minister, who will be voted in as Liberal Party leader in November.

But the reports say that is now off the table.

Deputy Prime Minister John Manley told CTV the news was "disappointing," but said work between the two countries goes on.

Besides Canada''s stance over Iraq and Chretien''s recent remarks, other gaffes that may have jarred relations, include a Liberal cabinet minister saying Bush had failed as a statesman and a Liberal member who called Americans "bastards."

superficially it may seem bad, but the relationship is still quite good. canada is the number one trading partner of the u.s.

btw, kudos to canada for letting gays marry. we could use a little more common sense like that on the u.s. side of the border.

Me? I'm not the one condeming relations.
Good Ol' George Dubya has postponed trips to Canada untill there is a "regime change". His unforgiving nature regarding the Albertan beef scare from mad cow also wouldn't indication strong compassion for national relations.

It took Jeb Bush of all people to actually come here and meet with Ernie Eves to improve relations.

(Yes, I'm back. And it's on! Doin' that politriks thing all over again.)
