Webbers in Staverton
posted on: 2/3/2004 3:02:14 AM

My 3 gr-grandfather, John WEBBER,was christened in Staverton in Dec 1808. He was (as far as I have been able to find in the records) the youngest of 5 children of John WEBBER and Ann LAPTHORNE. His obituary said he left home at the age of 9!

I have no death information about his father, but the relatively young age that he left home leads me to wonder if his father died and he was apprenticed out (through Poor Laws or some such? Hey, I'm a Yank! I know just enough to be dangerous :-)).

I have found a death for one sister, Ann, in the Parish Register. I have found births and marriages for his other 2 sisters...Mary was married in Broadhempston, Agnes in Stoke Damerel. I found a birth for brother William, but no other information, not even a death record.

By 1850, John had emigrated to the States and was living in Chatauqua County, New York State. His sisters were living in Lanteyglos by Fowey in Cornwall. They were planning on moving to NY that year. The 1850 census record indicates that at least one sister, her husband, and sons actually did.

A letter to John from his sisters, dated August, 1849, makes reference to "Mother", also.

I wrote to the DRO about apprenticeship records, and they indicated the records are still held by the Parish. I think I may be using the term "apprenticeship" incorrectly, though. I've formed a hypothesis that John's father died, there was no money, so the Parish took care of him by "apprenticing" him to someone (another farmer?) Is this an inaccurate picture?

Is there anyone reading this forum in the area who would be open to asking the current incumbent of the Parish for a "peek" at the appropriate records for about 1817/1818 to see if there's any mention of John?

I'm fairly sure that there are no direct descendants of John (1) and Ann still in the area. But it is still, in some sense, "home". And, of course, I'm interested in tracing the line back further if possible.

Many thanks,
Your American "Cousin",

I have some Webbers from Staverton in my family tree. They are Emma born 25 March 1857 at Gullaford farm Staverton to Thomas Webber and Mary Cleave. Thomas was born circa 1819 in Staverton. They were labourers on the farm and lived in a labourers cottage.
Sounds like there could be a link. Would love to hear from you.
