| Goulds to America posted on: 6/10/2004 4:15:13 PM Legend has it that 3 Goulds (Thomas, Robert, and John, possibly brothers, perhaps cousins) left from Dartmouth (point of departure only; there is no evidence to date that supports the notion that they actually lived there) ca. 1663/4, arriving in Hull, Massachusetts to take over the holdings of their cousin, Joan Bishop Stone, the childless widow of John Stone. Robert remained in Hull; John went first to Connecticut, then to Long Island, New York for a time and, finally, to Caldwell, New Jersey where he donated a plot of land for the building of a Presbyterian church. Thomas reportedly settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but we have no proof of that to date. We're looking for the English origins of the Gould boys (we suspect that Robert and John were brothers; Thomas may have been their cousin) but have been unsuccessful thus far. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at stanhelen (at) suscom (dot) net. |
