Bridge access
replied on: 2/7/2004 5:39:34 PM As ever its the small minority who spoil it for the majority. Its a shame to have to have them but you just need to see one large 4x4 towing a commercial trailor too wide for the gap, using brute force to push the old posts apart and in the process gouging the stone parapet of our beautiful old bridge (as I did) to understand why 'the authorities' felt the need to do it. There might be a better solution but its down to us to think it through and convince the council to try it. Yes, they are a pain but once you get used to them they don't hold up ordinary vehicles too much. And if you are in large vehicle or towing something substantial maybe its better for all to go another way??? |

replied on: 2/5/2004 5:18:25 PM I do tend to agree with you they are a little tight but I guess they restrict weight as well as width therefore protecting the bridge from that, or is that the general idea anyway. Luckily living in the village itself I have no need to go that way, I always go the quicker way via Littlehempston (that may start a debate itself) but not so easy that way though if you are towing a boat I agree. replied on: 2/5/2004 3:22:11 PM The new posts at either end of the bridge cause far more trouble than they are worth and must have cost a lot of people a lot of money in damage to their cars. The other day I had to reverse 50 yards back up the hill (while I was towing a boat) because the chap in front of me couldn't get through. On another occasion I saw an ambulance man get out to guide his ambulance driver through the obstruction. What point is there other than to stop great Euro pantechnicons from attempting the crossing? Is this website the perfect forum for a secret plan to tear the obelisks down? Be bold. Faint heart ne'er conquered official idiocy |
