According to my professor, narcolepsy is a type or subdivision of insomnia because of the changes in sleep patterns causing an irregularity that can cause people to fall asleep at random times.

the subject is getting annoying.

I really don't think that will ever know the truth about the subject to be honest. When you say irregular sleeping patterns what do you mean?

I can understand how the subject would get boring after a time.

what I meant by irregular sleeping patterns, is that insomnia cause a person to stay up for a varied amount of time. One night it could be 11pm and the next time might be 2am.

In some cases of insomnia, the person can become so tired that they pass out. With someone who suffers from both insomnia and narcolepsy, in most cases fall asleep.

I can see how you can have both narcolepsy and insomnia. Insomnia is the inablilty to go to sleep and narcolepsy is the involuntary switching off of the bodies motor controls, which simulates sleep. Not everyone with narcolepsy is asleep when they are out. A lot of them are fully conscious but cannot move due to the brain switching off all motor control.

Apparently when you are asleep your brain shuts off these motor controls so you don't physically act out your dreams. I guess a kind of safety mechanism.

I just saw a special on this last night. It may have been TLC or maybe the Discovery channel.

I also seen it Frank... Still trying to determine why I'm affected by sleep paralysis... it would be easier if I could learn to control it.. some people claim that they can and that they can also control their dreams...like in lucid dream state... some of the other theories I have found just seem so far fetched that It's unbelievable...

Shay, what symptoms do you have when you affected by sleep paralysis?

You might have posted this in another thread but I couldn't find it.

I've been plagued with "ASP" for years..It has no pattern that I can figure out... It will start right after I lay down to go to sleep. Sometimes I will hear voices "some that are different languages" then I will relax and it will start.. I've also taken note of the alarm clock... usually it will be up to a 15 to 20 min episode each time... seems like a lot longer... Their is always a dark presense involved and It's really crazy to see it move so quickly toward me..

I use to think that it a nightmare when I was younger but as I got older it seemed like my blood pressure, like I was actually falling into the mattress of my bed and it was a lot scarier thinking that maybe I wouldn't wake up. Now it's even worse. I see what looks like a tunnels of white in front of me, the dark presense is still there but the white tunnel moves closer and closer each time...

Through all of this I can't move, screaming I've given up on, my heart feels like it's going to explode and I can't get a deep breath. My legs, arms, etc,. are all paralize...pretty freaky... but if I could find a way to control that would be great... I'm also able to wake up and sit up for a while and be very dizzy and then it starts all over again.... I hate it and at this point I'm trying very hard to find out what I can do about it.... I will say that all the episodes are just about the same every time.

The symptoms are similar to other people I've talked to. I think that there maybe more than one type of sleep paralysis. one being psychological and the other being ghost related. In your case it sounds like it could be caused by ghosts. You may and probably already knew all this.

Well actually Chaos, that's one of the big questions for me to find an answer too. I have had my husband right next to me at the time of ASP and he will tell me he thinks I'm awake with my eyes open and then all the sudden my body will twitch and become stiffened...I've found a method where he can bring me out of it when he is awake at the time....for some reason I've found that I can make a hissing noise with my mouth to let him know that I need him to shake me out of it.. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't... more times than not I will have a very rapid heart beat and feel very dizzy when coming out of it. Also I've noticed that it doesn't happen quickly .."my coming out of it" it's more a gradual thing. Where I'm aware that it's happening and then just trying to get myself back to normal..Also I feel very drained afterwards..my body will be sore etc,. As far as ghosts...I've had strange things happen in my home since I could remember.. I've come to accept that it's just the norm in my home.. maybe I'm just more suseptable to ghosts than other people I don't know...

I wonder if it's a type of seizure. Not all seizures are violent events. When my brother-in-law first starting having them he would ge rigid and just start into space.

No they ruled out any type of seizure...They say all parts of my brain are functioning at a normal level..had scans and MRI's they even thought for a while that it was pinched nerve in the neck causing it...now they are not sure what's causing it. Actually they tell me that I'm a very sound sleeper. I do remember most of my dreams to the tee so to speak and also I'm very hard to wake up. LOL My kids and husband have a real good laugh when I fall asleep on the couch...LOL

Actually when this does happen I get a warning sign... When I first lay down to relax I will get a dizzy feeling just like when they put you under for surgery... I know that, that sounds funny but it's the feeling I get and then from there I can see and feel everything just can't move and it sometimes even hurts to breath. I've been tested for everything... I'm tending to lean toward the paranormal on this one guys... The doctors can't find a logical explanation... I'm a very healthy girl they say...Nothing physical, nothing mental to explain why this is happening...that's why I've been researching it so intensely....

Damn, sounds like you have quite a task on your hands. What kinds of specialists have you seen? Is this "problem" a threat to your health? If not why worry about it?

Over the years I've seen every specialist imaginable...Even a sleep disorder specialist.. I think my regular PCP is just trying to make money at this point because it's beyond his comprehension. LOL

Life threatening, hmmmm I'm not sure on that one... I'm physically/mentally healthy so not at the present time..

If you've ever experienced "ASP" I'm sure you would be trying to find out what the hell it is too....It can't be controlled unless they give you all kinds of medication and for me that is not an option. Actually I'm trying to figure out the actual cause for mine... at this point I've come to a stand still...The reason I worry is the long term effect if any on my health. I want to know, if over time it could be a life threatening condition...

I guess the only thing close to ASP that I have experienced is when I was learning OBE when I was a kid. There was a couple times I hit a paralyzed state just before the vibrational state. The first time it was scary but after that I expected it.

Well I will keep my eye out for any information on it. If I find something I will let you know.
