Unprecedented Sleep Episode
posted on: 2/8/2006 2:35:05 PM

Forgive the length of the post, but I am including a short synopsis of my SP experiences. I hope it will clarify the difference of this most recent experience.

I have had SP episodes since I was about 11 years old. At first, the "spirits" weren't malevolent. In fact they acted scared out of their wits. I wanted to help them, but I was paralyzed. That's when I realized I was dreaming.

In my early 20s, I saw one spirit that looked like a man, but his eyes were intently evil. The first time he didn't touch me. The second time I heard my brothers fighting about a prize in the cereal box. The spirit picked up my broken ankle, leered at me, and I felt an electrical shock shoot up my leg into my hip.

Since then, the episodes ranged from one to three "ironing board" figures. While I couldn't see their faces, I could see their eyes. They rarely touched me. If there is any sense of touch, it usually is their "hand" hovering over my body. Sometimes they appear at the bottom of the bed, other times they are behind my back, and most of the time they are in front of me.

I sleep mainly on my right side, but have experienced episodes on my left side. I've only had two experiences lying on my back. I don't feel pressure on my chest or a choking sensation. Most of the time, I just feel an evil intent and the paralysis. I have experienced this when first going to sleep, when waking in the middle of the night, and upon waking in the morning.

A few years ago, I experienced a few episodes of OBE, which was accompanied by the SP, prior to travelling. However, it didn't involve any feelings of evil spirits or fear.

I've experienced some episodes in the past, where I feel the "spooning" or something from behind pressuring my arm or pulling back on my shoulder. Recently, I've had some SP episodes, that were pretty par for the course.

What is unique about this most recent experience is that normally I recognize that I am going to have an episode because I start getting a 360 degree view of the room. I usually check the clock during this period.

When it first began, most of my episodes lasted at least five minutes to about seven or eight. Typically, I am now able to wake myself within one to two minutes. Last night, I was unable to see anything at all.

I felt a cool breeze and thought it was strange because the new windows do not have any air coming through the seals and the glass never gets hot or cold no matter the weather. I was going to get up to see what was going on and that is when I felt the paralysis. I tried to get my 360 survey and couldn't see anything but blackness. Then I felt an extremely cold blast that gave me chills and I attempted to snuggle down into my covers but couldn't move.

This is when I felt the evil presence slightly behind me at the bottom of the bed. I immediately felt my body levitate and could swear that I was just over the side of my bed near the nightstand. I began praying and it took some time before my lips would move. Once they did move, I felt my body jerk and woke up.

I sat up in bed and out of my left peripheral vision I saw a black wispy shadow. I turned my head to look straight at the area and didn't see it. The room was very chilly so I got up to see if there was a temperature difference outside the room. It was probably 10 - 15 degrees warmer just outside the room. I turned around to enter once again and out of my right peripheral vision, I saw a glimmer of a black wispy shadow. As I turned to look straight at the area, it was gone.

I have never felt the presence so strongly after waking. I never have had a drastic temperature change before.

We moved in this house about seven years ago. There was a ghost in this house for close to a year. It was more of a practical joker and I never felt threatened by it. I got "rid" of it because I found out that it is not good to have any spirits in your home because they tend to attract others that may not be friendly.

Any ideas of what I could have experienced? I sure would appreciate the feedback.

Wow, Good stuff, Jkay! Errr.... Well, maybe not for you, but for us.... LOL Anyway, if i'm not mistaken, I believe Shaybeck has mentioned seeing "Inroning Board People" during her episodes. Have you ever noticed any marks anywhere on your body where you had felt pressure during any of your episodes?

Thanks for sharing and please keep us posted about all of your episodes! Be sure to read through all of Shaybeck's posts about her SP episodes as well. We may be on to something very interesting with hers.

Yours In Strange Happenings,

Hi Aedryan,

LOL, I wish I had the same appreciation for this that you do. I've read through Shaybeck's postings and decided that sharing mine would be a good idea.

Touch hasn't been involved in a majority of these SPs. The paralysis I typically feel is heaviness, not as if I am being confined. The pressure that I have felt has been very short-term and I have never experienced any discomfort other than with the electrical shock incident.

However, since the appearance of that man, I have seen these figures. As I stated, they range anywhere from one to three, when I see them. Sometimes, I can wake myself up before they appear.

Even though I was initially very frightened of them, I had stared right back at them to let them know they didn't frighten me. LOL, they probably laughed at that effort, but facing down a bully usually resolves a problem.

After speaking to my grandmother about it, I started trying to pray. As soon as I can get my lips moving, I am able to wake up. I told her about the dreams because I thought maybe she would have experienced the dreams with the large number of dreams she remembers. She never has given me any indication that she has experienced these dreams. In fact, no one in my family has admitted to having them.

When I saw the marks left on Shaybeck, my latest experience concerned me. I've never felt the sensation so strongly after awakening.

Jkay, My "ASP's" were similar to yours and haven't felt contact up until this time... I could feel the heaviness also and the reason that I say the dark shadows resemble an ironing board is because that's the outline shape of it. I just recently saw a face so that was different and now the contact. I also sleep on my right side and occasionaly my left but always end up on my back. I've had "ASP" for 30 years and it wasn't steady and there is no indication when it will occur for me... I know what you mean by having a panoramic view also...That is when I start to feel a sensation like my body is getting really heavy but yet it could be weightless... as that is happening the paralysis starts to take affect.

The cold shock... when you say this your referring to a jolt like touching something and getting shocked.. If that's the case I've felt that also in the past..I've also felt like my chin was going to my chest just as the dark shadow moved forward.. It seems as I get older that the symptoms are getting worse in my case... still looking for a logical reason for the marks on my arm and also trying to be rational about them.. I guess I'm being my own skeptic at this point because nothing has ever happened like this before so I'm looking for logic first....I would like to thank you for sharing your "SP" episodes with us for 2 reasons....1. I don't look like a total nut case and 2. maybe by comparing we can figure something out about them...

Hi Shaybeck,

I'm approaching 25 years with my episodes. Before this last one, I could accept the possibility of them being caused by some neurological misfiring or medical complication.

I have had severe health problems in my life, and therefore thought that possibly these ASPs could be caused from poor quality sleep. I have been deemed very healthy mentally and have never mentioned these episodes to any of my doctors. LOL, Who knows what they would think, if I mentioned them?

The sensation you describe with the panoramic view is what I feel too. I always try to rouse myself during that period because even though I "know" they are dreams, they don't feel like it. Sometimes, I am successful. Most of the time, I have only one episode, but I have experienced a second.

Now, I have noticed that once I get that sensation and I am able to rouse myself, that I have had to struggle to keep warding off the ASPs. In fact that is when I have felt the "spooning" and the pressure from behind. I am also able to rouse myself from these. In fact, I have felt pressure on the bed behind me, with no touch. I usually just end up getting out of bed because I get such an aversion to experiencing the ASP, the more I resist.

When I saw your post about the "ironing board" figures, I thought that is very close to their outline. Most of the time, the clothing is in shades of charcoals and black. Have you ever seen the figures in shades of brown/brownish-red? I don't know if that is significant, but I was curious.

I have never seen a face in the figures, but I have stared them down in their "eyes." Very much like the eyes of the man that I had seen in two of my ASPs. The man was definitely, the same man and I can still see him quite clearly in my mind's eye. I've never been revisited by him since the electrical shock.

As far as the cold and the electrical shock, these are two very distinct incidents. This latest episode I felt a cold breeze. Almost as if my window were open wide. Then when I realized that I couldn't move, I felt a cold blast, like a wintry wind gust.

The electrical shock felt exactly as if I had been hooked up to a low current voltage. It was in the early morning, and I felt a very uncomfortable tingling up that entire leg for a few days. Almost as if the circulation were being compressed. In fact, I did go in to the orthopaedic doc to have them remove the cast and check for constriction. LOL, I didn't think it was a good idea to tell them about my dream bogey-man.

I've never had the feeling you described with your chin being compressed toward your chest. Do you think this may have been from you trying to rouse your muscles to get up out of bed? Or did you feel as if it was from an outside pressure?

I can't think of anymore questions at the moment, but I am so glad that we are able to compare our experiences. I sure would love to figure these out. Some of my friends and family that I have described these too look at me as if I have lost my mind.

Thanks!

It is nice to chat with someone who has something a little similar to my episodes also...As far as the brownish/red color no I haven't seen anything like that... It's usually just the blackish/greyish type. I also refer to it's shape like an ironing board because one of the times that I had it I thought the shadowy figure was just my ironing board and then realized "Oh my I don't have an ironing board" LOL it really freaked me out.

My chin being compressed to my chest started with what felt like my head being moved from side to side from shoulder to shoulder example: your head is straight and then your ear goes to your right shoulder and then it goes to your left shoulder...after that happened it felt like something was pushing "from the back of my head" and compressing my chin to my chest.

I also have had episodes where I can rouse myself before the paralizing and it always seems like it will start right back up. I can't control it. I will feel ok and then it starts again...

Unlike you I feel that I am not asleep at the onset of the "ASP" My husband has also said that it can happen while we are watching tv in our bedroom. I can hear him yelling to me and touching my shoulder, but I'm sometimes not able to bring myself out of it. He has also witnessed my head going from shoulder to shoulder and then to my chest. I will say that I do start to relax when it will start and in my head I'll think "@%#%#% here we go again" Then most of the times I'll just ride it out but this last time was a violent one and I'm not sure what to make of it.

Oh and I forgot to mention...I've brought this to the attention of my PCP and have done sleep clinics and just recently did a heart monitor to see what happens to the heart during an episode...I have been cleared of all mental illness, epilepsy, etc, but still not able to figure it out.

Yes, it is definitely nice to share this and know that the other person understands. Also, just the opportunity to maybe uncover some kind of common thread to this, is an advantage too.

> "Oh my I don't have an ironing board" LOL it really freaked me out.<

I'll bet! Guess that is the brain trying to make sense of these episodes and images.

Wow, that is very disturbing to hear about the manipulation of your head. Has this been going on for awhile or is this a relatively new occurrence? I'm curious. I didn't feel any physical touch with this levitation event, but I knew that it was nothing I was controlling. I am wondering whether the violence you experienced progressed from more innocuous manipulations.

Actually, there had been a shift in the times these occurrences tended to happen. In the last ten years, a larger majority have happened just as I am in the process of falling asleep. I also do not feel as if I am asleep most of the time. Prior to that shift, the majority had happened in the middle of the night and at times upon waking.

> My husband has also said that it can happen while we are watching tv in our bedroom. I can hear him yelling to me and touching my shoulder, but I'm sometimes not able to bring myself out of it.<

I am single and have never had anyone around to observe what has happened physically during one of these episodes. That could be a big advantage in helping you get a more logical explanation.

I used to have the television on a sleep timer, and have heard the audio in the background. I can't remember if I saw any of the programming. I have broken myself from that habit of TV in the bedroom. My brothers sleep with their televisions on and I have heard those in the background also.

> I will say that I do start to relax when it will start and in my head I'll think "@%#%#% here we go again" Then most of the times I'll just ride it out but this last time was a violent one and I'm not sure what to make of it.<

Because of the intensity of evil that I have felt from these "spirits," I do not relax during the onset of these. I rouse myself ASAP. I give you a lot of credit for that! Maybe, if I had someone around to recognize these and rouse me, I would be more willing to ride these out. That could be instrumental in getting some answers.

My last event is definitely what is driving me to try to get some answers. I sure don't know what to make of them. Guess we are not alone in that aspect, the "experts" don't quite know what to make of them either

when I first started having these episodes I'll be realisitic " I had no idea what was going on" meaning that I told my parents about them and they told me "Oh you had a bad dream." Most of them were during the middle of the night at that time..or just when I was waking up...I was even told I had night terrors?? Not sure if they are similar but what I experienced as far as I'm concerned was not a night terror. As I got older and started to piece things together I started writing everything down... I know sounds crazy but hey I was an inquistive person. Then there was a period of time that I spent the majority of my time "at night" alone...My ex-husband use to be a truck driver...gone for weeks on end so yep I was alone with the kids...That's when I noticed that the dark figures resembled an ironing board and realized that I only had one that went on the table top "meaning a table top ironing board"...not one that stood up against a wall and certainly not one that moved...LOL ... There was even a night that I called my Mom and took my kids to her house because I was just so freaked out...I've come to accept what happens now and that was in the early stages of me figuring out how I could bring myself out of it.

As far as my head moving that just started. I think I stated that the episodes are getting more intense with age. I have no idea why?

My husband likes to watch tv in the bedroom because we have 3 teenage daughters and sometimes even going to the game room doesn't work for some peace and quiet so we relax in our own little domain...we also have a timer on our tv and I have heard the tv audio even when I don't have and "ASP" but when I do and if I'm pointed in the right direction when the paralysis starts I can tell my husband exactly what went on with the tv show..sometimes I'll even get a glimpse of some actor on the screen.. it is really hard to explain.

I think you misunderstood me when I said that I start to relax when the episode starts... what I meant was that just as my body starts to relax and I feel calm it will happen...not asleep, just relaxed... Like for example: Laying down in bed and finally your body doesn't have to hold itself up and no more "what else do I have to do" kind of relaxed...

I'm so glad that I have my husband beside me when these things happen and he is an understanding man...Can you imagine what we have went through in the last couple days with me having marks on my arms and trying to figure out how they got there if neither one of us knows????? He has been through a lot with me trying to figure out what is going on... and I will add that he is a big skeptic.... he is also agnostic and sometimes finds it hard to believe that these things are happening to his wife... but with no other explanation....what can he think?

The experts!!!!!!Hello...they are no help at all... I've had people hooking me up to stuff trying to figure out what's wrong with the crazy lady!!! No I'm not crazy... I'm a very level headed, logical woman that just wants some answers and they have no clue... really they don't... I've tried that avenue and here I am on a paranormal site looking for the answers... and hey so are you.. I just want you to know that they won't give you the answers that make sense to you...believe me I've tried their therapy etc,. It doesn't work, and I don't want someone trying to tell me to take a drug and see what happens... so I guess we are on our own.... except for the paranormal there is no explanation for me anymore.

Ok I wrote a novel...LOL sorry I'll try to keep it shorter the next time.

Your experience with this sounds very much like mine. Probably if I hadn't been so seriously ill, I may have decided to check into this.

Like you, when these first began, I couldn't make sense of them. I got the same treatment from my parents. In fact, I don't even discuss it with them any longer. It has been a learning experience.

To anyone who has not experienced one of these, they have no concept of what a person goes through. LOL, I guess that is why it is so easy for the experts to sweep this under the rug.

Also, I am not comfortable taking any kind of medication that will alter my sleeping cycle. As it is, I feel very little to no control with these. The last thing I am going to do, is be under the influence of some kind of drug.

Thanks for clarifying your meaning on the relaxing issue. LOL, I just couldn't picture myself being brave enough to voluntarily experience these episodes. When I am relaxing has been the most frequent time I experience these. It's hard to explain to someone how awake you actually feel during these. Let alone, the vivid images.

You and I are of the same mind on this matter. It's definitely past due for me to get some answers. I have had the feeling that these ASPs have been intensifying and can no longer brush this off as mere circumstance.

I could tell that you are a lot like me when it comes to getting logical answers. In fact, many of those close to me have complained that I am just too logical. I can't help it, I don't know any other way to be! No, I don't believe either one of us are crazy. Too be truthful, I know of a number of people that have gone for therapy and they end up in even worse shape.

I am glad that you have your husband to help you through this. I've got a couple of friends that are being very supportive.

Also, one of our dogs has been very attentive when I was very ill. He has shown that same sensitivity to a few others. I believe if these events intensify, he will go retrieve one of my brothers. He has done so previously for some health crises.

I also have a dog...She looks ferocious but in all reality she is a wimp!! LOL She also seems to know when someone in the house is sick and it almost seems like she wants to help them.. I could be wrong on this but even if someone is sad, crying, etc, the dog will pick up on it and either lay beside them or at their feet. So I understand what you mean....

My dog has her own bed so she is not in my bedroom at the time of these episodes..I don't know how she would re-act to them...hmmm maybe I'll try putting her bed in my room and see what happens...

Definitely worth a try! If you have noticed that sensitivity in her, she is a prime candidate.

The older of my dogs was around when we had a ghost in the house. He always was able to sense the presence. He will not voluntarily go into the basement to this day and we haven't had any experiences in over five years now.

I haven't noticed this sensitivity in the younger dog. As the dogs are in and out of my room during the night, I can't really say if they have noticed anything with these episodes. I guess it is time for me to utilize the webcam.

Hi Elisha,

The only time I have ever felt a wind blowing was with this recent episode. I didn't feel it blowing into my ear (I sleep on my right side.) I felt it blow over my exposed skin.

The first felt like a cold breeze and the second was like a wintry wind gust.

What concerned me was that I had never felt anything physically before other than pressure. When I woke up the room was cold and I felt an evil presence still upon exiting and re-entering the room.

Unprecedented Sleep Episode
replied on: 2/11/2006 6:24:27 AM

I felt an episode beginning upon waking this morning. I felt as if I were awake and had just decided to get out of bed. I rolled onto my back and that is when I felt a pressure upon my lower torso.

I attempted to move my arms and found that they were paralyzed too. They just felt like dead weight. The pressure upon my lower torso seemed to be steadily increasing.

I made a few other observations I have made that perhaps I never had paid attention to before. Let me know if any of you find these typical of your experiences.

When I realized that I was having an ASP, I took my routine 360 survey of the room. This time, the room appeared in natural darkness. Previously, all my experiences have had a colorized night vision-like appearance, unless there is an artificial or natural light source. I'm not sure if this is significant, I just observed that it is different. I also stipulated "colorized" because all my dreams are in color. I've talked to several people who find this unusual.

Another thing I noticed is that while I have been hearing background noises in my ASPs, this morning was different. I have never been able to hear myself audibly during an ASP. I could hear my inner dialog, but I also heard myself gasping as I was attempting to vocalize.

Any thoughts or similarities?

I sleep with a night light on...just a small one but recently have been trying to get rid of it. My last episode the lights were off and yes I remember seeing the room in a very low color. As far as dreaming in color...yes I dream in color...

Hearing yourself...yes I can hear what sounds like a moan and know it's coming from me trying to yell...I can also hear when I'm trying to tell my husband...it's like a little signal that I'm able to give him... I am able to push air through my teeth...but only once. It took me a long time to be able to do this. That's how he will know and try to bring me out of it..sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't.

Cold air...or a gust of air. No ...but this recent episode I felt something touch me that was so cold it felt like dry ice...if you know what I mean....that's the only way I can describe it...

I've felt pressure on my chest and also pressure on my legs...my arms are basically useless until I can move again...then everything just feels like dead weight for a few seconds then I'm able to move.
