It is picturesque with the onion domed bell towers and a lot of people like to take pictures of it. When I started getting moire's from the picket fence in my photos I also noticed a faint image of a skull in one photo. After showing it to anyone who wanted to look, I started hearing the ghost stories about the church. In one case, a local Aleut woman went to plant flower bulbs on the graves of some of her relatives. While she was doing this she realized a man and a woman were watching her, and when she looked up, she noticed they were dressed in really old fashioned clothing. When she realized she could see through them, she left everything laying there and never went back. Another woman told me that late at night sometimes people hear singing coming from the graveyard. Of course anyone out that late has probably been drinking, but even so, enough people have noticed the phenomenon for there to possibly be something to that. Another person told me that at Christmas time they can hear the bells ringing by themselves. Sometimes the congregation will be at service and suddenly they hear the bells ringing. Oddly enough, this happened even when there were no bells hanging in the tower. I finally went into the church yard at the suggestion of a church member who said it would be okay to do so and tried photographing the graves. Nothing unusual showed up in the pictures I took, but I was left with a profound sadness that had me crying every time I thought about that place for a few days. We have another graveyard at the other end of town where people from all over the world, as well as from our community have been buried. Oddly enough, that graveyard is very peaceful and I don't get any sense of sadness or grief there. I don't know why there is such sadness at the church graves, but I noticed there were infant graves next to some of the couples buried there. I haven't asked about that because a lot of hard things happened to the people here and it's best to wait for them to feel like talking about the past rather than scratching away at hard memories. |
