Barracks and Homes

Merfolk. no keep bonus. So definitely barracks for all military troops, BUT:

if the barracks are housing all military troops that means that the other buildings are housing all the peasants.

assume 0% homes and 0% pop mods. Now every building is housing 15 peasants and employing 20. that makes each building have 5 spare jobs.

with no pop mods then, you still need a home for every 6 reg buildings, even tho you have barracks for all your military troops.

1:6 = 1/7 = 14.28% homes even if you have no pop mods and barracks for all troops.

is there a flaw anywhere in that logic? ive been thinking about it the past 2 days, and started doing so when i overbuilt barracks but was still at 100% emp. and it seems to make sense, tho it seems kind of at odds with the usually curt response of "make barracks is less than 26.7% pop mods."

thoughts? let me know if im wrong before i get that homes % too close to 14%.

No, no flaw. If you look at almost all the races, you'll see that most of them should run some homes. It's not 50% like it used to be, but as you've shown, for races like Merfs it can get as high as 14 or 15%. This is why I suspect it would be good for sylvans to run a few barracks. Not many, just enough to help boost your efficiency. This wouldn't be true for WE since they have no cap for their unit strengths.

The thing to watch out for is if there is a more efficient building than homes for your race. Dark Elves are the best example. Wizard Guilds help them more than homes do.

Thanks Tim.

i just thought it was kinda odd how people will say "build rax" but not "build rax, but make sure you still have enuff homes".

weird thing is, ive had some surveys on some pretty high ranked people atm and some are running no homes.

and also, took ya long enuff to respond! j/k i was figuring you were away for the weekend.

oh, and since you brought it up,

is there any simple math you can do to figure out the optimal homes % for a DE (by simplicity i mean something bordering on how easy it was for me to do as merf) or do you jsut rely on the efficiency calculator?

As for high rankers not running homes, you have to consider that acres under construction are just like half a home in that they house 15 people and employ none. And at this stage of the game, you almost always have a bunch of acres under construction.

I don't think there is really any simple math to figure out the optimal number of homes for DE since their unit strength depends on the WG%. If you assumed 50% WG always, the simple math would be to build whatever % of land is left over into homes.

Sorry it took so long to reply the first time, I went to my lake cabin this weekend and turned into a lobster.
