I'm trying to make a building calculator to compare building strats, but I'm having problems with the max population formula. I know what the formula is, but its cyclical. =(30*[Homes] + 15*([Employed Buildings]+[Land in Construction]) + [Barren Land]*[Racial Barren Pop])*[Max Population Mods] - MAX(0, [Total Military] - 40*[Barracks]) - [draftees] The Draftees part depends on Total population but total population depends (in part) on draftees, thus excel tells me it is a circular reference (which it is) and I have no idea how to fix the problem. BTW, I looked at your excel sheets and they are very nice, but I have one problem with them. I can't zoom to see what I'm looking at better. Thanks for any help, -Regis |

Hey Tim (excel question)
replied on: 5/28/2003 6:16:56 PM Hey man, I wanna say theres a way for Excel to deal with that. I think its Tools | Options | Calculation and then check the Iterations box. I know I had to do something for circular references on a finance case last semester and I think that was it, although I could be completely wrong =] |

Hey Tim (excel question)
replied on: 5/29/2003 2:23:10 PM Sorry, I was away for the weekend, and I have a really nasty cold now. J-Roc is 100% right. Iteration (or recursion) is handy for calculating things like population and production. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to see what your finished product looks like. |

Hey Tim (excel question)
replied on: 5/29/2003 7:00:37 PM Its nothing special, just a little tool by someone only familiar with excel basics designed to help map out building percentages over the round. I've focused only on the exploring aspect really, as I have yet to finish a round. I always make it into the top 50 for the first 2-3 weeks and life gets in the way. (Except for the last time when I made it to rank 7 before being nailed by a fellow halfer that declared war and had just gotten LotD). Anyway, my excel sheets don't factor in Forest Havens or shrines correctly yet since I think they are useless and don't plan on using them, and I still need to find time to add in Prestige. But if you want to take a look at it I'll be happy to show it to you. Its nothing like the complex pages you've done though Tim, so don't expect that kind of work. Leave your E-mail address or AIM screen name and I'll get it to you. -Regis |
