I ask since Spying has a random factor, and maybe you'd know if you had a good chance of succeeding on the next try b/c you had low losses....

If you are trying to steal something, then the loss rate for failure is 1%. As for how the spy/magic system works, I'll have to do some tests. I read once that it went something like this: Your SPA/WPA Target SPA/WPA Chance of Success 1 1 50% 2 1 75% 3 1 87.5% 4 1 93.75% 1 2 25% 1 3 12.5% 1 4 6.25% I doubt the accuracy of that though.

I only tried once, and it worked out to 1%. After I get my last attack in, I'll try stealing from him again and post the results.
