A pack is 6 people who all join the same realm. If you have 5 friends who want6 to play, but you all want to be allies, you would create a pack, and then you would all end up in the same realm. If you all joined randomly, there is very little chance that even two of you would end up in the same realm. This is important because anyone not in your realm is an enemy, and it is technically against the rules (and definately against the spirit of the game) to share information with people not in your realm.
