the new rules. good or bad?
posted on: 11/2/2002 4:44:01 PM

what do you guys think, did the league get more exciting with the new rules? the goal scoring went up, but to mee it seems that the dificit between the teams that have good players and those that have not so good players has become bigger. we've seen many big scores last week, a few with 6 or 7 goals for one team. i kinda have the feeling that the teams with good stickhandlers (detroit, philly, but also tampa bay and minnesota) are in the advantage. their stickhandling guys get more space to make the moves and score the goals.

or am i wrong and did all those teams just have a bad night when they got 7 goals against?

I think that, generally, that new rules are only good for the game.
There's a lot of more power play, and we can see how it helps guys like Mario, who are experts on power plays.

But I don't think it's necessarily helping Jagr that much. One of his strengths is that he is able to skate and stickhandle while somebody is hocking or holding him.
The "new" rules should prevent the grabbing and the hocking, so I think it helps many other super stars more than it helps Jags.

But sure, the new rules gave us some more skating and some more stickhandling.

It's interesting to me that Kovalev says the new rules aren't giving him any more room, and he is one of the best stickhandlers. I personally think it's a pleasure to watch the players play without some huge guy attached to their back! I think the players are still in the learning mode -- especially the defensemen -- on what will be called and what won't be called.

I like goal scoring so I like the way the games are going. Plus the games are so much faster and over in 2 hours or so instead of dragging on endlessly.

Of course, Mario is my all time favorite player and I love seeing him have time with the puck to be able to make some great plays. He's not scoring goals the way he did when he was younger, but his playmaking is sensational and having Kovy and Morozov to feed is a big help.

Maybe Jagr and Kovy are in the same boat on this one.

Yes, I would think so.
Both Kovy and Jagr have trained themselves to be able to beat players one-on-one even with the grabbing and the hooking.
And the best way to stop them is not by doing that. The best way is to block their path with your hands, while still trying to poke the puck away, not comitting the first move.

Jagr uses his strength and balance more when deking while Kovy waits to make his move, taking quick turns. But they are strong enough, that if they manage to get past you, it's almost impossible to make them lose the puck just by hooking or trying to grab them.
But I think it's players like Mario who aren't that fast anymore that actually benifit the most from the new rules.

So it's still a good rule in my opinion.

i'm glad the new rules are working out alright. indeed lemieux (and the pens with that) could be benefiting the most of it.

jags and kovy just have to get used to it still. i'm also very glad that there's some more excitement in the games, eventhough i don't really like it when games end up in a 7-2 score or something... i'd rather have close games. is it really showing that the teams with less offensive talent are losing easier now?

To me it does not seem as teams with less offensive talent are losing easier now. Both the Lightning and the Wild are playing really well. So that is proving the opposite!

But, I'm sure it does have a difference. But probably not a very big one. Like, a team with not so skilled players that play well together is still very likely to win vs. a team with good players that aren't playing well together.
It's not that it open up the game completely.
