So I am doing some reaseach into what I should buy. It seems that one of the key things I should be looking for is to keep the size below the maximum carry-on size for most airlines. However, this will limit the size of the packs to something on the small size I feel. How critical is it to be able to carry your pack on the plane? Carrying your luggage on will elliminate the possibility of your luggage being lost. But how likely is that to happen? I haven't travelled a lot in my life. I estimate I have taken about 15 trips in my life where I have travelled by airplane. So that would be about 30 times where I have checked luggage. I have never had a piece of luggage missplaced during any of these trips. So I wonder how critical it is to keep my bags below carry-on size? |

Question about carry-on sized lugguage.
replied on: 6/7/2004 4:02:36 PM I fly minimum twice (that's 4 times if you count there and back as a single trip) a year and I've never lost anything when checking. However, I can not begin to go into how nice it is to be able to step off the plane and walk out the airport and not have to wait the standard 1/2 hour / 45 minutes it takes waiting at the caroselle with what feels like a million other tired travellers. I reiterate on my previous post, pack everything you intend to bring in a daypack. It doesn't take up any space on plane/train/bus and is nice and light and doesn't keep bumping into others. |

Question about carry-on sized lugguage.
replied on: 6/7/2004 6:02:37 PM quote: The maximum carry-on size bag is actually quite big, here is a picture of mine (it's a discontinued 54L (?) MEC bag with detachable day pack): ![]() When I head OUT for a trip, I usually take it as a carry on. It's usually half full on the outward part of the trip (Anything more than that I would probably have problem carrying it around for duration of a trip). I like having the option of carry-on or checked bag on return. As lost sheep already mentioned, it's a pain to wait for checked luggage, especially if you have a tight connection, and have to wait for the bag to go through customs. I used this same bag for weekend trip, and trips of 6 weeks. |

Question about carry-on sized lugguage.
replied on: 7/26/2004 5:40:18 PM quote: For me, it is critical, but sometimes I am traveling with people who check their stuff. quote: It happened to a friend who traveled to Italy, it really messed up his trip (four days without his stuff). It happened to me once in the States (three days), and it was a real pain. As stated in the older thread that Lost Sheep posted, even if your pack is small, if it is too heavy, they won't let you carry it on. At the end of our recent trip to France, when we checked in for our flight home, mine was a touch over the weight allowed (6 kilos on British Airways) but they let me carry it. |

Question about carry-on sized lugguage.
replied on: 7/26/2004 8:32:21 PM Klein, A good followup question is where will you go with your bag? If you only fly to one place in Europe, and stay there, going nowhere else, carry one won't be so critical. Once you add further travel on busses or trains, that changes. The further off the beaten track you go, the more annoying your large luggage becomes. Many busses and trains have no accomodation for any luggage greater than carry one size. Your initial question asked about other makers. I'm hopelessly in love with my Patagonia bag. |
