Id like ter think Ive played part in all the failed bids fer Brums second city inc:- Olympics The Dome National Footie stadium EURO CITY OF FAILED BIDS and many more in fact yer could say Im the Jona of Brum and me great,great Grand pappy was the Mascot fer the Titanic !! |

When he speaks he talks fine and then drops in very carefully anunciated brummy slang, practically winking and wiggling his eyebrows to draw attention to it. He is a plastic brummy. A real brummy would never charge so much for a local newsletter. And another thing. Going by the local and national news he looks like the only pseudo-brummy willing to get in front of the camera, which is a shame as he`s quite poor when he gets there. Is there nobody else? He`s just like Kevin Warwick, a self publicist, admired by those who know nothing. /rant... sorry. |

replied on: 9/4/2003 2:33:26 PM I must admit that I completely disagree with just about every point raised above (and I've yet to reach my fortieth birthday, before anyone asks). His accent is not fake - it's not middle-class, if that's what you're getting at, but it's certainly not put on. He was born and raised on the streets of Sparkbrook, which is still part of Birmingham, I believe. He didn't have anything to do with any of the failed bids you mention, but if he had been involved we'd probably have got them, seeing as he appears to be the only person left in this city able to speak with knowledge, passion and conviction about all things 'Brum'. I think the blame for most of the things wrong with this city lies squarely at the feet of Herr Bore. Re: "Why does his accent sound so false? I think you need to acquaint yourself with the meaning of the words accent, dialect and slang. Chinn has quite a strong working-class Brummie accent, and he also uses a few Birmingham dialect words when he's speaking to fellow working-class Brummies, 'cos that's how we speak round here. Yorkshire people speak in Yorkshire dialect, Brummies speak in Brummie dialect. He doesn't use slang, he uses dialect - they're different. 'Enunciated' begins with an 'e', by the way. There was that bloke at Birmingham university who had a go at outsiders having a pop at our accent. And I think Chinn speaks eloquently and passionately about our city, its people and outr language. Why don't you have a go if you feel so strongly about it? The reason it's only Chinn we hear is because of people like you who can't be arsed to get off your fat backsides and DO something positive instead of whingeing all the time. replied on: 9/4/2003 5:23:34 PM I would also like to give my vote of support to Carl Chinn. Not because I'm an oldie, which of course I am, but mainly because he is just a very nice, caring bloke. You may well have made some valid points about being a self publicist to a degree, he has become a trade mark of himself to some degree, but how is that different to any other person in the media? Anyone who has had any personal contact with Carl whatsoever will absolutely verify that he puts himself out to give time and energy to ordinary folks. No secretaries or appointments or PAs or publicity agents, you just phone him up, or go up to him in the street or up the Villa, wherever, and he will give you the time of day and...he'll remember you the next time he sees you. Now that might sound like a bit of a cliche in this day and age where every blighter you come across has their own hidden agenda, but it means a lot to people like myself who believe in the old values. He's a very nice man ... take my word for it or go and test it out for yourself ... but come on folks ... get off his case. |
