Do we know for certain that his name is actually Malik? Has anybody asked him? It's lucky that it's alliterative with 'Mad'.
It could be 'Insane Imran' or 'Tapped Tariq' or 'Barmy Bilal' ,'Crazy Qasim','Unhinged Uday','Yampy Youssef','Mental Mohammed','Deranged Dancing Dave'.

He looked very hot today, buttoned up in a quilted jacket, dancing furiously on Bordesley Green down by Palace Road. He had a broom handle nearby, but was using the power of the jerking movement to keep strangers at bay.

My real question is this: is anyone watching out for him? Is he dropped off in the morning and regularly supervised, or does he make his own way to wherever he is going? I'm trying not to worry about him, cause I guess if he hasn't had his head kicked in yet, he must be safe!

He's getting plenty of life lengthening exercise too!

I'm hoping you are referring to his dear old mother.

I am not! All you groupies out there take note, Birmingham's greatest manic stick waving dancer is spoken for.
It could have been an arranged job. Imagine the poor girls surprise when she first cast eyes on her spouse. Then again it is not for me to be judgmental it could be a beautiful relationship built on love.
Sex with the wild man of jerky dancing could be fun. Dont knock it till you try it.

Saw the legend on Saturday on the way back from The Blues.

He was at his spiritual home of the corner on Green Lane near The Emerald.

Hottest day of the year, yet the barmy bastard was giving it some with the dancing whilst wearing a thick jacket. A menacing-looking stick (looked like a shepherds crook to me - the beer at St.Andrews must have been strong..) was behind him however I think he was in such a trance whilst jiving, he would have probably been too late should he need to use it.

Much respect to the guy. I think BRMB should look at getting the guy the Freedom of The Great City. If they can bang on about Ozzy Osbourne getting it, I'm bloody sure Malik deserves a shout.

Come the new season, I hope to see a lot more of Malik - I'll be walking up past his spot on Green Lane on my way to The Blues from my matchday boozer. Updates will follow for the exiles.

I just saw him outside the Crossover cafe by the old Broadway pub. He still had on his jacket and it was bloody hot. He still had his broom handle, and he was just waving it about to start with.I worriedly thought that he had finally stopped dancing. A minute later, though, he was dancing around like a good 'un. All is right with the world again! Huzzah!

Can someone get a photo of him so people not on that side of brum can go recognise him?
The man is a legend, but like most legends has not been witnessed first hand.

You are aware he chases people/cars to beat them with his broomstick/lump of wood, anytime he makes eye contact, I hope. Pointing a camera at him would be like suicide!

They could send the nice Asian lady (Shefali?) that reads the weather for Midlands Today to interview him as she is nice and may not scare him to much.

The Double Whammy.

As if I had ESP I could see a problem looming as I chugged down Bordesley Green yesterday afternoon. A bunch of barely clad ladies heading westward, one heavily clad Malik about to turn East out of Palace road. There was almost a collision! He had his stick and didn't seem to like having his personal space invaded, albeit inadvertently. Much incoherent ranting ensued. Thank goodness the traffic wasn't moving and I had a prime seat at the back of the bus, or I would've missed the thrilling action.

Then, when I was returning from a night not exactly on the tiles, but pleasant nontheless, I had the joy of seeing him again. At two in the morning he was still giving it large outside of McDonalds. That's a lot of dancing. Explains his trim physique.

Problem is that I used to just comment to myself, oh there's that fella bobbing about with his walkman on. Now I get all excited and starstruck. My eyes pop out and I start rubbernecking at the guy. This feels unhealthy. Get him a movie deal someone, to justify my obsession.

Back in the mid 1980's, we used to live about 5 doors down from The Vine, and Malik was there on the corner pre-empting the 'Acid House' craze by a few years...He didn't seem to have a stick very often then - just the ubiquitous personal stereo (batteries not included?)...

I remember one occasion when I was waiting at the corner to cross, and a car-load of 'straights'(as they were quaintly known in those far off days) threw a car radio at my head...I could have sworn that Malik laughed...

I saw him again outside the Chip shop by the Broadway about four days ago. I was passing him on the bus. He was stomping like a good 'un. Two teenage girls came out of the chippy, greeted him and touched fists in a hip-hop, new jack city, kind of way. He smiled, stopped dancing and he looked almost calm. Then a passenger on the upstairs shuted 'Go on, Malik!!', and he went mental again, dancing and waving his mop handle about.
I think his residency at the chippy is going to end before the panto season, so go and see him while you can!
