To be a true shaman, though, he needs to get peyote, which even in Bordesley is a bit of a tall order.
What's more worrying is the fact that NHS employees, seeing an obviously mentally disturbed individual, decided not to take him to hospital for treatment, or as he is not actually hurting anyone, just leaving him be, they decide to abduct the poor sod and take him to the biggest sewage outlet in Lancashire. How amusing.
Maybe the Malik they kidnapped is still in Blackpool, shaking like a shitting dog under the illuminations. The one we've got down here is either an identical twin or a clone! There could be hundreds of them in cages in a laboratory hiddeen somewhere in our fine city.
The cloning theory would also explain Malik's lack of ageing. He just gets replaced every few years by a younger clone. Who said genetic engineering doesn't benefit mankind?

Not true.
As a worldwide, trans-historical phenomenon, shamanism has utilized all manner of substances, from Fly Agaric in Siberia to Ayahuasca in the Amazon. Indeed, the "Zen" shops in Moseley and Brindleyplace now sell shamanic mushrooms traditionally used by shamans in Mexico (great for listening to death metal on, I find).

There are also varieties of non-drug shamanism, which employ such techniques as meditation, prolonged fasting, self-mortification, and, yes, DANCING.

The stick which Malik uses can be seen as a symbolic representation of the "Axis Mundi" - or World Tree - of shamanic belief systems, with roots reaching down into the lower domains of ghosts and spirits, and branches stretching up towards the gods.
Also, Malik's wearing of a thick padded jacket in hot weather could be part of a bodily purification ritual akin to the Native American "sweat lodge" ritual.

Most significant of all though, is that - his legendary day-trip to Blackpool aside - Malik seems to confine his dancing to a handful of "power places." Traditional shamanism has always been deeply rooted in place, with local landmarks being seen as possessing psychic and spiritual dimensions as well as physical ones. From the perspective of Malik's trance-dance, dreamtime psychogeography, I would imagine that Brum must appear as London appeared to Blake - a truly "magical" city.
O that we could all be mad enough to see it thus.

A theory worthy of proper consideration, Mittonsmate. That or he is just another harmless loony.

Saw him but two hours ago. Dancing. Stick close by. Cap clamped firmly against the cold. The man knows no fear.

I was engaged in the very quotidian process of sitting on the 96/7, to much avail.

Malik is a well known homeless person with a host of mental illnesses and social problems.

Some people find it funny and ammusing to laugh at his nonconformist actions, strange demeanour and predicament: I don't. BTW he is also credited with inventing text speak, (soz, txt spk).

I have had the odd chortle at his madcap antics over the years mind you, though I know it's wrong and always feel guilty later.

Malik is not homeless,I believe he has a wife. He may have a different perception on the world than the rest of us . He did not invent text speak, he is above such idiotic drivel.
He is a well respected member of my local community.

As an obviously learned sage posted on Malik's forum, his freedom from the oppression of 'normal' behaviour is a symbol of hope for us all. Ok we may have a bit of a laugh from time to time, but I am glad we live in a society where a man can dance on street corners if he feels like it, (generally) not being hassled, even if his batteries ran out in 1982.

All Tony Bleurgh wants is every British citizen scurrying around after every last dollar too afraid to step out of line. Malik often looks happy, writing about him makes me feel a little less preoccupied with tedious banalities of fitting in. Happy, even. It's not just laughing at the village idiot. Unless that had a similarly refreshing effect on olde worlde bumpkins. To quote the Reverend Biafra, "are you so afraid what will people say...take your social regulations and shove em up your ass". Malik is living the dream. I genuinely salute him. As long as no one gets hurt.

if malik is really homeless then why stand there of all places?

there is a lot of joy to be had from knowing of and seeing malik. He does make you think of happier times.

Malik we salute you !

Do you notice that you never see him dancing at night? Is he solar powered? Maybe he's not, but his Walkman is.

He was doing his foot to foot jerk dance by the chippie this lunchtime. When I returned as dusk was falling, no sign of him. Solar powered indeed.
