Shining example to us all. Lots of wiork for charity, selfless and good to the poor; although I could be mixing her up with Mother Teresa.

Yes well done Rachey, a very good choice. What a marvellous woman Dame Jill was (is?) A shining example of traditional British values and a great benefactor to the lady's hair salons of Edgbaston and Harborne. You name a coloured rinse and Dame Jill tried it at some point. A massive improvement on her New Labour successor. Now you all know me well enough to know that I'm no racialist (some of my best friends are from Willenhall) but, no, I'm going to say it, we didn't fight the Hunn to have that little madam swanning around Harborne Safeway buying up all the Leebraumilk and sourkraut. Say no more. Bring back Dame Jill ... if she's still with us that is!

However Gisela has nicer calf muscles. Jilly never could carry off a knee length skirt. I always feel more confident about the country's future when the MP for Edgbaston has a nice skirt on.

Baroness Dame Jill of Knighthood is the most famous person (Aside from my legendary self, and the receptionist off of Casualty) to have attended KE Handsworth. I always felt a tinge of shame. Nobody had anything good to say about any of us! Thank you for bringing dignity to her memory. If only some other members of this so called chat area had taken it upon themselves to do the right thing, to show the moral backbone you've shown the world, Ma'am.

Now, I'm off to try putrid puce by clairol. This one's for you, Jill.

Yes, but that face. She was like a little angelic Pilsbury dough lady. You knew you could trust her on that basis alone. Has anyone seen that Reverand Bashford who's a labour councillor in my area? He's a scruffy Herbert he is. I mean, would you really trust your future in the hands of someone that can't even dress himself in the mornings? No you are absolutely right Rachey, appearance is everything in politics. Gary Newbon should definitely stand as mayor.

Estelle Morris on the other hand looks a little on the pinched side. Makes an effort, is smart, enough; her car always looks recently cleaned as she drives past me (more than I can say for the bus stops, Mr Bore!)

Give me dough queen anyday. It's hard to place your confidence and trust in a woman whose face betrays the fact that her own dinner doesn't trust her.

I'm not sure that last statement worked as well as I had hoped. You get the idea.

Without wishing to sound like I'm trying to set up a reunion, or being indelicate, might I enquire as to the decade in which you attended? Looks like I've gone and asked it, without permission. Any good gossip about goings on behind the bike sheds? Are foundation schools a cause for Brummie pride?

I think there was the notion that grammar schools (the real ones) were preserving a way of life, old values, good manners, upward mobility but knowing one's place. They obviously did a good job. Our fine head mistress ordered us to insist our parents vote conservative in order to preserve the fine tradition of selective education. The schools are still there although the tories be not. Or are they? Tony Blair, triumph of grammar school values and deceit?

Yes i hated it, but certain comprehensively educated frineds of mine have pointed out a number of salient benefits. Not getting glassed during double maths.

I'm seeing a pattern develop in these four postings. Schools that think they're better than everything else, old fashioned and snobbish, selecting on the rather dubious grounds of intellectual ability: everyone suffers. School that specialises in a particular area of expertise: much beloved. Given the introduction of these technical colleges and schools claiming specialism in science or whatever, do we have the opportunity to see a glimmer of hope for the future?

Did you learn anything at said art school that you wouldn't have got anywhere else? Do you use any talents/experiences developed there in your everyday life?

I started in 1974. Already had a reunion and what a gas that was. I confess to having a foindness for the place. But perhaps that's because I'm fast approaching middle age and wistfully looking across the years with rose tinted glasses...
